PostSubject: Hello from Western Nebraska   January 8th 2017, 10:10 am

Hello everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself to the forum. I'm just getting started in primitive muzzleloading and think I have found a great place to learn about the ins and outs of something I know very little about. Over the past 5 years of so I've gotten involved with lots of primitive skills and think I have an addiction problem. What started with traditional archery has blossomed into primitive fire starting, trekking, tanning, trapping, making my own buckskin gear, and generally trying to get good at the things you folks know about. Muzzleloading seems to be next on my learning curve. I've already learned quite a bit just browsing some of the threads. Thanks folks!

Welcome '83!  I too have deep roots in traditional archery.   I still make my wooden arrows from scratch.

Anytime! I can't say that I make professional stuff by any means but certainly suits my needs and wants. After reading the article you put together while assembling the Hawken, I'm sure putting together a pair of moccasins would be a piece of cake! Seeing the way that gun changed throughout the process blew my mind. Thanks for sharing it.

You picked a good place to start. Take your time as you assemble your wares, rendezvous are the worst place to get advise from on what's correct. If your talking to someone that attends regularly some way tell some of the most misguided information on history and when questioned about the subject and what really happened. You'll find they are repeating hear say and haven't read a book or done any research on their own (hear say that was probably passed on a half dozen times). That always makes me burn.

Many of the traders will tell you anything you want to hear about the item they are selling to make a sale - correct or not, its about the sale $$$ (like buying a used car). This one can cost you, do your research, be sure you know your time frame before you get started and take your time, look at all options. Now there's Ebay and other sources on the Internet to look at, gather information, able to ask questions, etc.

When I first started out back in the 50's there weren't many suppliers and wares were usually old Civil War tin ware along with other items that weren't even close to the fur trade era. When your young you believe what your told is correct then several years later you find you didn't know squat. Man I have had some of the best garage sales of wrong period items.

Bottom line research, research and more research ....
