PostSubject: CVA Hawken Re-Bore to .58   February 22nd 2017, 11:23 am

Well... I shipped off my CVA .54Cal., 1" barrel to be re-born as a .58Cal. slow twist patch 'n' ball shooter.  I'm anxious to see what twist rate it will come back as since I left that completely up to Mr. Hoyt.  I'll then have both a caplock and a flinter in .58Cal.  Should be fun at the range!  Twisted Evil

wow! I am really looking forward to this! If it comes back as good as most of his work, I'll seriously have to consider another kit gun and let him take it out to 54cal.

My shoulders are bad already. A .58 would completely demolish my right shoulder. The .54 I have is bad enough.

Let us know how you like the final product, Joe.

Bob, A .58 isn't so bad. I used to shoot 130gr 2fg Olde Eynsford, THAT! was a brutal load. Normal loads of 80-90gr 2fg are very easy on the shooter, especially if yours weighs 9lbs like mine did. Mainly the reason I sold my .58 Hawken, Just bothered my neck to much these days.

That's the load I shoot, 80-90gr 2fg.  I just like the .58.  My Cabelas investarms flinter with the 1:48 twist shoots real well with that load.  (not as good as Jon shoots though) Very Happy

Lets see 58 ya I have I think like 4 of them. Na maybe its 3. But there isnt much difference in the 54 and the 58 imho. Joe if I was to guess I bet Bob will do them in a 1 in 60. Thats what he did with 2 of mine. The guy does superb work. Al

I have an 1864 Springfield rifle that is a .58.
Compared side-by-side with balls for .45 cal rifles, you need some big balls for a .58 cal!

I'm really fond of my investarm flinter .58Cal., maybe more of a novelty, but it is fun at the range.....they make big holes!  The rifle is really nice also.

Mr Hoyt said he was back logged due to knee surgery.  He had to take the first 6 weeks off this year to get on the mend.  When I get this barrel back I'm giving the CVA Caplock muzzleloader to my brother.  Then we both can have fun at the range.

I did the same thing only I gave it to my best friend. I gave my TC Hawken 58 caliber that was done by Bob Hoyt to him for hunting season last year. He loves the rifle and really likes shooting it. I then turned around and bought 2 CVA's I found in 58. I also have another Hawken with the 58 caliber Green Mountain drop in barrel. Its very accurate. Mine are all cap lock. Al

Well I got my now re-bored .58 CVA barrel back.  Looks good!

Bore: .582
Twist 1:60
Depth .011

On a side note: For the downloaded image I used "My Hosted Pics" instead of Photobucket.  Quite a difference.  It was quick, easy and not drowned in commercials and advertising.  Loved it.

I'm giving it to my brother to make another .58 Cal "convert".  I stopped in at Track Of The Wolf and picked up some patches, jags, bullet puller, etc. to get him started.

Mr Hoyt is one very talented man that has done a couple of re-bores for me.  He is located in PA.  His info is listed below.  Give him a call, let him know what you want done.  He'll give you a price.  He sometimes is little hard to get a hold of, just keep trying.

That only took about a month, Joe. Do you have a special "in" with him?

No, and not for any particular reason.  I just like shooting patched round balls.
