PostSubject: New GPS and software   April 9th 2017, 7:28 pm

I have a GIS (Geographical Information System) background in addition to Criminal Justice. The first GPS I purchased was in 1994 and it was only a 8 channel receiver. This was before SA (Selective Availability) was turned off. I own several GPS units, all utilized for a different purpose. I recently purchased a Garmin 64s for Pam and installed a Alabama Huntview sd card in it. I will let you guys/gals informed on how it performs. I know there are several versions of GPS software out there, most of them are good and user friendly. If any of you are thinking about buying a Garmin and using Huntview software, stay tuned, I am going to review it like a hunter would use it.

I'm sure that program is much better quality than the standard Garmin topo software. There is not much detail on Garmin's maps.

I just got a Garmin Oregon 650t on clearance. It's faster than my 76 mapCS but I hate the touch screen. It gives more useful area but changes screens if you brush it accidentally. It is smaller but heavier than my old one too but it holds 200 tracks opposed to 20 on the old one.

Touch screens can be, well what can you say, touchy....... The Oregon 650t is an excellent unit. The Huntview software is based on 1/24,000 topos. That is good detail for hunters and outdoors enthusiast. We have some touch screen laptops but I still like to point and click.

I have both non and touch-screen type GPS units.  I wasn't fond of the touch-screen at first, but I solved my problem by using a plastic pen tip to move through the MENUS... rather than touching it with your fingers.  A gentle tap is all you need.  It doesn't scratch and keeps the screen cleaner. Smile

Jotjackson, I too am very familiar with the seemingly infinite data-base layering and features full GIS can display.  I would be interested in what features you find useful for the hunter.

New here, and I'm waiting for your review of the Huntview on the Garmin 64.  I just got set up with a 64 and huntview map of Michigan. It seems there is no instruction book with it.  I'm hunting out west this fall and will need to know the ins and outs of this system before then.  Thanks for any help you can offer.
