PostSubject: May build another "Hawken"   January 5th 2014, 12:37 pm

I have an offer on a CVA Hawken that has a bad barrel on it. Not a big deal as I was going to trash the barrel anyway to build what I wanted.

I know the first thing I would do is strip the stock and reshape it for a more Hawken look, almost like what I did to my 58 but more in depth this time around.

Now the barrel I will use of course will be a 32" Douglas with patched round ball twist. The question.... 45 - 50 or 54 cal?

Depends on what you plan to do with it.

If you want to hunt with it in RB I'd say .54

He already has the .58 for that.

A .54 in the rack won't hurt.

Why not just bore the "bad" barrel into a smoothbore? .. shot or ball .. double the fun.

If I'm not mistaking that .54 can be smooth bored to 24 gauge(.58) , will make a nice little shotgun.

For deer here it's ok. Not for elk. PRB doesn't matter here. It's the caliber.

I know some guys here also have a minimum calibre when hunting with a muzzleloader.

I'm talking about the law here. Not personal feelings.

I'd use a .45 for elk here in a second. Who thinks a .45 300gr bullet won't kill an elk?

I'm in the process of getting all the parts together to build a .45 with a 1:20 twist for hunting and target shooting to 600 yards , so no I see no reason why a 300 gr .45 won't kill an elk or perhaps an eland.

Our forebears used .45's to kill most anything walking this earth , so why can't we ?

Our forefathers were in trouble when they came west, and ran into bigger critters than the black bear and whitetails they were killing with .45's.

Enter the great plains rifles in bigger calibers. The .45 conicals are great. The PRB? Not so much.

I am an absolute rifle loonie.  Muzzle loaders, bolt actions or single shots all have been on the radar at some time or another. NOT AR's, F*#K AR's! Oops I feel a rant coming on.
When it comes to rifles there are some criteria I look at.
Caliber, velocity potential, energy potential, platform and its intended job.
To my way of thinking it's a matter of having enough gun with out arriving at ridiculous overkill.
The job is the deciding factor as to how those criteria are met.
For instance, if you want a Grizzly Bear rifle, a .45 caliber round ball gun "MIGHT" not be the "BEST" choice.
On the other hand, whacking squirrels with a .375 Weatherby Magnum or a 585 grain maxi-ball "MIGHT" be considered overkill by some.
Platform, meaning the style of rifle, (Hawken, Tennessee, Kentucky, Blunderbuss, 1903A3, Mauser, Krag, Browning M2; etc.) is a matter of personal preference unless you are looking for period correct rifle.

Are you looking to fill a gap in the collection?
Which one of those caliber choices are you lacking?

I agree on the .45 PRB , that's why I asked whether it will be legal to use.

I know here they frown upon you if you want use .50 PRB as the reckoning is that it does not retain enough energy at 110 yards even though we barely shoot further than 75 yards when hunting in the brush.

Spitfire,  I completely agree!  That is why I need at least 12 high power rifles ranging from 6MM to .458", six shot guns from .410 to 10 Ga., more rimfires than Cabelas and an as of yet undetermined amount of muzzle loaders.  Just in case there is a niche to fill and as a backup in the case of a malfunction or an unexpected friend shows up.

Well I wouldnt mind a 45cal but in truth it most likely will be a gun build that I will turn around to sell. Maybe finish the stock and let the new owner pick out the caliber he or she wants on it?

You could do a stock with a 15/16" barrel channel then .45 & .50 and .54 are all options.

It has a 15/16" barrel channel but I can open it up to 1" if i can find a 58cal barrel.

Here the small caliber to deer hunt with is a .45cal. I wouldn't mind one.

I told Jon i'll buy this gun. I want a .58 for elk, but if they don't have a barrel left, i'll take a .54.
