PostSubject: What happened?   January 7th 2014, 8:13 pm

Years ago I hunted with a Thompson PA hunter round ball rifle. Nice rifle.
Maybe 7-8 years ago I bought a savage ML-10 smokeless and hunted ML season with that, including this year. Great rifle.
I recently started to embrace traditional type rifles again and started looking at whats available. I can't believe that Thompson Center dropped it's traditional line. They don't even manufacture a Hawken anymore? Wow...
I understand the reasons I guess but just don't believe it. Strange times...

I am a deer hunter first. I like all weapons and seasons. I can and will hunt with a longbow, single cam or a crossbow.
I'm just as happy with a rifle as a shotgun as a flintlock so I'm not one to divide over what type of weapon. Those arguments are silly IMHO.
I'm just surprised that the market isn't there in TC's eyes to produce at least a couple traditional type rifles.
I guess I'll get the PA hunter back out for now.
Guess I'm getting old.
 Sad

I think it's a result of S&W buying TC a few years back & then not doing anything to strengthen their sales. They have also dropped some inlines & there is a rumor floating around that TC smoke poles will be totally discontinued. TC quality & designs have been called into question a lot since S&W took over.

Wow thanks for that info Greg. I was out of the loop on all that.
Dejavu, Marlin/Remington
I guess it's easy to take things for granted when there available. I used to really trust the TC name.

At $750, they priced the Hawken way out of the league. Used TC hawkens are on the market at $200-250 these days. Im not a huge TC fan by any means, I do not like their rifling system at all so this doesn't hurt my traditional rifles lol.

What is it about the rifling that you don't like? Just curious.
Trying to get up to speed as whats out there since I was shooting the savage for years and am just now wanting to shoot black again. One of my boys will hunt w the ML=10 next year most likely.

Very Happy

Seems like you and I thought the same way about T/C still making a line of Side locks. I was informed by my buddy GregK to check out Armslist.com. When you get there click on your state or any state and then click on muzzleloaders. You'll find all kinds of T/C's side locks. There was one that was brand new in the box with a lot of extras for around $6 or $700.00. As much as I would like to have one that's a little too much for me.
Well, WELCOME to the forum Exclamation

People seem to think that the ammo shortage/gun-buying frenzy means their old guns are suddenly worth double. Very few people would consider buying a muzzleloader for a home defense weapon.

In Florida the number of people hunting with muzzleloaders is shrinking. It may be that way in other states too. That means there will be a glut of these guns on the used market soon.

Sure isn't that way in the west. It's a hard tag to get.

Good tags are hard to get here too. We actually have more hunters due to migration of the Yankees down to Fla. but the percentage of hunters of all kinds is dropping, especially muzzleloaders.

We have too many freakin' people here. They project that Florida will surpass NY in population by 2015 making it the third most populous state after Cal. and Texas.

Although it is a socialist state, Ct has some of the best deer hunting available.
I get 4 bow tags every year, re curve to crossbow- and can get replacement tags for each doe I shoot
shotgun /rifle is 2 tags, again with replacement tags for does.
Muzzle loader is 2 tags, again w replacements.
Then bow opens up again for the whole month of Jan
Of course, we don't have the scenery and views you boys out west do, but I like our hardwood forests and swamps.

Very Happy

IL's bow season starts around 1 0ct and runs thru Jan 16th or so. A hunter can buy 1 or 2 tags for archery when he buys  his license. Archery season stops for the Fire Arm Season and the Muzzleloader Only season. The last 6 days for hunting deer with a fire arm is in Jan and the archers can hunt with their bows but have to wear Orange.
Fire arm tags are either EITHER SEX or ANTERLESS. When you buy your tags to hunt with a fire arm you have to get your tag or tags for the county your going to hunt in. That's the only county you can hunt in with a fire arm. You can buy all the additional tags until that counties tags run out.
Lets say Pike county has 5000 tags. Resident hunts apply and get say 3500. Now the nonresident hunter applies and takes another 1000. That means there are 500 more tags that could be sold over the counter after everyone who applied got theirs.
Archery tags are good thru out the state. The hunter is not confined to one certain county.
So a  hunter could get 2 archery tags and as many fire arm or muzzleloader only tags he wants.
EXCEPT........ A hunter in IL can only take 2 bucks for the entire season whether its with arrows or bullets. 2 BUCKS ONLY. Does, as many as you want as long as you have the tags. I usually buy 2 Fire arm tags, 1 antlerless and 1 either sex and 2 Muzzleloader tags same as fire arm tags.

So you are like Tenn in a way, they have a 3 buck limit, regardless of method, statewide.

Fla. doesn't have tags or season limits on deer. 2/day as many as you can kill.  :shh
