Very Happy

Jon,
Looks better every time you post a pic. Glad you antiqued the brass. Looks and sounds like it's all coming together slowly. Its better that way.  scratch

Ray............. cheers  cheers

yes slow is good! Tomorrow I am going to file fit some brass to the stock. I can feel a slight edge at the nose of the stock so I want to make sure thats all fit before shaping and sanding the stock. Just makes it easier for me and the end product, that much better.

Hey Brother that is a nice looking rifle.  I like your thinking on keeping the brass a bit on the dull side.  I never been a fan of shiny.  A rifle is a tool and should be expected to be used like one.  But that's me.

The .54 round ball will do what you want on bear and elk provided you keep the range limitations in mind.

You hit the nail on the head there Archie , PRB is at best a short range projectile. I'd say max 150 yds with a .58 or .62 with hot loads.

7 coats LMF Walnut on the spare ramrod for the 50cal barrel. Luckily it was made of the same stock wood so this was a perfect test then the actual stock itself.

Ray what do you think? Dark enough? When in the light it has a slight reddish hue like real walnut. Darn near reminds me of the black english walnut LOL.

10-4! The black is actually some of the softer wood figure, I love how it turns black like that, almost like a really old finish that sucked up age over time.

Just waiting on the parts to come in, chewing my thumbs to the bone waiting impatiently LOL. I am going to do a how to bed write up once I get to bedding the tang.

That is really dark and I like that coloring.  I will keep that in mind for the next project which is already in motion.

Jon,
I just looked at that rifle on the other forum that I showed you and that one is more brown. I like what you have there better. I like that reddish tint a lot more.

"YOU THE MAN. JON"

Ray............. cheers

A good deal of stock shaping. I finished up the forearm and some brass trim earlier so I wanted to get the rear section of the stock worked on. Reshaped the cheek piece slightly to make it just a little more nicer than how they typically look as factory cheek pieces often just fade into the stock rather than being pronounced. Looks like deer creek took payment today so I should have my parts by the end of the week and then finally be able to set everything into place and shape the wrist area. I don't want to get to crazy with wood remove in the wrist due to it being  a 58cal but I will have plenty to work with to help oval it off.

Sure is a good looking rifle.  A .54 caliber patched round ball is a good game killer too.

Here she be! UPS dropped off the .58cal barrel and a few other small ends. Just bedded the tang, will do the trigger tomorrow once the tang is all set and dry.

Allrighty! Front and rear sight installed. Just so you know Ray, I actually opened up the front sight dovetail to accept the standard 3/8" dovetail. Just makes it easier if you ever want to play around with other sights up front. Factory hawken rear sight dropped into place without a hitch and will be adjustable. The front sight in german silver thick blade to help fill in the rear sight slot. Me likes it so far!  The barrel was so fresh that when i ran a patch down the bore, i actually pulled out some metal shavings LOL.
