I sure wouldn't buy a gun because it was sponsored on a hunting show. They'll shoot anything if they're paid to do it.

The VORTEK StrikeFire LDR, MAGUNM comes in scope-less at 6.8 pounds with a 30" barrel.  My CVA Kodiak with its 29" barrel scoped comes in at just under 9 lbs.  Heavy yes for the Kodiak, but it shoots painless magnum loads all day.  As far as MLers go in general the 30" barrel I like in the VORTEX... but its weight I don't.

I'm also not a big fan of hammer-less MLers.  A hammer to me draws the line from my modern muzzleloading generation to the next.

Anyway, I'd still like to see some range results from the new VORTEK    Neutral

p.s.  Again. no .45 models.  Sad

Not a fan of long barrels Marty. They just get in the way in the woods.

Remember Carlos shooting 1" groups with a CVA cut down to a 20" barrel?

i'd take my LDR to heavy dense woods or open corn field in my state of iowa for giant whitetails, which has 2 season muzzleloader early and late season

not the strikerfire ldr. Its basically the same as mine but with 2" extra barrel added. It only produced around 60-70 FPS over the 28" barrel so not a real huge selling point.

That is correct you do not need a long barrel to achieve this.

Well guys like I promise Tony and a couple of others, and even thought my buddy Dlethcoe bit me to it, I took both of my short 50"s out and shot them at 300 yrds. Both guns did great, but the APEX was amazing. I first shot them at 100 yrds to make sure they were on, had to tweak the TC a bit, but it did not take long. Now when you both targets, keep in mind that the TC had a Nikon OMEGA 250 scope on which I don't really care to much for since with the circles at that distance you can really get a good POA, like you can with the Bushnell DOA 250, and that might have made the difference. At 100 yrds is no problem, but beyond that it is. Well here are the stats and targets. I only shot one bullet,a SST'S 300 gr. .500 sabotless.
APEX 50 CAL. 20'' BARREL
TC PRO HUNTER 50 CAL. 20'' BARREL
BUSHNELL DOA 250 (ON THE APEX)
NIKON OMEGA 250 (ON THE TC)
DNZ MOUNTS ON BOTH
HORNADY SST'S 300 GR. .500
LUBED WOOL WADS
BH 209, 110 GR.
FIOCCHI 616 209 PRIMERS

First two pics are the targets at 100 yrds. the first pic is the APEX and the second pic is the TC. Did not have to do anything to the scope on the APEX.

This is the TC at 100 yrds. She was shooting a bit right so I adjusted a bit left and she was on.

Apex at 300 yrds. four shot. the low left was trying to figure the POA, and once I did the other three are there.

TC at 300 yrds. again four shot. low center was trying to figure out the POA, and once I did the other three are there. Not as good as the APEX, but I'm going to take the Nikon off and put a DOA 250 on her and take her back out.

And here they are. First the TC and the next pic is the APEX.

I , like both of this guns, and they shoot great. As a matter of fact Hawg, I'm thinking real hard about taking the APEX with to IL. What do you think.

I thought it was 200 yds. Even more impressive at 300 yds.

Why did you buy a long barreled gun? What advantage do you think it has for your kind of hunting?

Just curious.

They all get the job done. Just pick the one that appeals to you the most.

No doubt the accuracy is there, do you have velocity numbers?  I know it's just a calculation but KE is greatly effected by velocity. I could see the numbers being ok for deer at longer range but wonder about it being high enough for larger game like elk. Using data from NAML for the LDR and a 300 grain PT Gold with a muzzle velocity of 2000 fps at 300 yards it would have 1058 ft pounds KE. By reducing the velocity for a 10" shorter barrel by a factor of 30 fps loss per inch gives us 1700 fps. Using this number in my ballistics calculator it is good for 808 ft pounds KE at 300. This is a 250 ft pound difference which is fairly substantial.  I have never been elk hunting but it seems most people want energy levels above 1000 ft pounds of KE.

Another part of the discussion is bullet drop. The same ballistic calculator shows almost 15" more drop for the slower bullet. I have never shot 300 yards before to know how accurate the DOA is at this range. I know it is pretty good on my LDR at 200. Carlos I know you have done a lot of shooting at longer ranges and are an excellent shot. Are the numbers I'm using reasonable?  If so then this is the justification I would use for having a longer barrel. On the flip side I could see where the shorter barrel would be great if only hunting deer and you still wanted to go to 300 yards since it is still above 800 ft pounds.

For the record I do own a Traditions LDR and like it but also feel that all of the newer muzzleloaders are good guns. I also do not own a chronograph so the numbers provided are not my own.
In my previous post I was not trying to start an argument or offend anyone. I think what Carlos has done with different muzzleloaders is amazing and helps all of us members on the forum.
