Finally got time to get back top work.
Started filing the barrel, first stripped off old finish.
Single cut bastard mill file, chalk and wire brush/file card.
Chalk up the file, One cut at a time then clean the file and re-chalk.
Tedious slow work but well worth the effort.

All the effort you put into it now will be well worth it in the end.

Archie, I like to see craftsmen at their work. For those like me that are not skilled in the art of finishing, keep us updated if you can on your project.

It keeps the file from clogging up Marty

The chalk also acts as a bit of lubricant to help sliding the file with the cut.  Plus puts a really nice powdery coating over everything in the shop, really makes it look like you've been busy.  When filing be sure to have a good flat contact and clean the file after every cut or the shavings will gouge the barrel.

Marty, I am also not very skilled in finishing but I can talk the talk.  Most of my work looks like it was built by a gorilla with an 8 pond maul and my biggest most successful project is a scrap heap, but I'm trying to improve and maybe someday I will reach the novice level.  One consolation is all that wrecked walnut and maple makes really nice loading blocks and knife handles.
