PostSubject: Carlos' TC Hawken Refinish   March 30th 2014, 4:55 pm

Got all the finish off today, shes been block sanded with 100 grit and then soaks with a wet rag to raise the grain before I knock it down with 220 grit and do that a few times. One small little dent I was unable to get out due to the amount of wood I would have to remove and when you do any many stocks as I have done in the past, you know what to leave alone! After I use a clear filler and finish the stock, it will look like a knot. She'll be beautiful once I oil the stock and then go with truoil over it.

This why we don't ever stain walnut! Just a simple thick coat of BLO, sit for 15 minutes, wipe off and allow it to set up a bit before hand rubbing in another coat until its hot.

Oh it looks a whole lot better these days. A very dark rich color with the tung oil on it. Last night I used 0000 steel wool and buffed it down, then applied another coat of tung oil, very smooth! I still have plenty of coats to add before the barrel arrives.

Are you keeping the barrel or does Carlos want it back?

Im keeping the 45cal barrel and the other parts gun stock.

I got the other hawken in, what a shame, beautiful "burl" figured walnut like crazy at the forearm, but 2 nasty cracks in the stock by the lock plate. Typical areas for a TC to crack.

Glass bed it once you get a lock and trigger. That should hold it all together. Maybe it will even hide the cracks.

MANY coats of low gloss tung oil, buffed every 3 coats with 0000 steel wool. Last night I rubbed it down with boiled linseed oil and let it dry over night, wiped it down with a rag and shes very good looking now. Its amazing what an oil finish does VS a spray on finish, this stock was originally a orange looking color.

That came out nice. You didn't use any stain on that?

nope just a couple base coats of boiled linseed oil, let it dry and then tung oil from there. Thats all natural walnut, zero stain.
