PostSubject: .. CCI MINI MAGS .......   June 13th 2014, 1:21 pm

scratch  scratch  scratch

Was at Bass Pro the other day and I picked up 2 pks of CCI Mini Mag #11 percussion caps. These few questions are for the side lock guru's out there.
I'm getting excellent groups with Remington per/caps but wanted to try  CCI's out for a while now and finally was at B/P when they had a few left on the shelf. I have no problem with the R/P caps other then a few duds.
Will my POI be different now if I switch Question  I presume they are hotter. Will that have any bearing on the velocity  of the .570, .530 or .490 RB Question Do they burn cleaner Question
What makes them be a better percussion cap in your opinion Question

Thanks to all who reply... :rtup

IMO, if they go off when the hammer falls, they're all the same. Therefore cheaper ones that work are better than costlier ones that work.
I use Winchester 11, CCI 10s and 11s, CCI Magnums 11, Remington 10s and 11s, and RWS 1075(?). All have worked for me so the ones that fit the individual nipples best are the ones I use.

Agree , if it works i'll use it . No PT to adjust the sights if it shoots a little higher or lower.

Nothing should change as far as shooting Ray. The CCI cars are longer than the Remington, and will fit on the nipple differently. Use the one that fits the tightest for hunting so it won't fall off. It doesn't matter what you use for the range.

Thanks gents for the replies. The info always comes in handy.

Pete, I didn't know that they are different in size. Haven't tried to put one on a nipple yet to check. Will check later.

Just like 209 primers Ray. There doesn't seem to be any standard.

Same thing for nipples. They have different tapers too. Once you find a good fit combination for nipple and caps. Stay with it.

The Ted Cash cappers are made for the longer CCI caps. They work perfect together. If you use Remington caps in a Ted Cash cappers they won't stay upright, because they're too short. They'll turn sideways, and jam.

Very Happy
Thanks Pete. I just capped a nipple and they seem to fit OK. Won't really know how they fit until I get to the range. I can tell you this, once I slid the CCI onto the nipple, it wasn't slipping off which is good. Maybe they'll be OK.

Thanks again,
Ray........

The only concern you have now is..........are they going all the way on and seating? If not you get a misfire, and when you fire again it will go off. What happens is the first strike of the hammer seats the cap all the way, and the second hit of the hammer fires, because the cap is then seated all the way.

If you get the cap not firing on the first strike. Even if it's every now and then. You have a poor cap to nipple fit. Don't ever hunt with it. It should fire 100% of the time.

I normally lower the hammer onto ill caps and while holding the trigger push the hammer forward with my thumb to fully seat the cap , that way I don't get misfires.

I do too, and have for years. You will still get misfires with a bad cap to nipple fit.

I speak from frustrating experiences.

That's when the fit is really bad.

Yes, but it's so hard to tell the difference between a tight fit, and a too tight of a fit. All you can do is try to fire them. In the beginning before I knew what was going on I was blaming the caps for not firing instead of the fit of the caps.

Everytime I read someone say such and such cps suck, because they had misfires. I always suspect the fit, and not the caps. A change to a different make nipple might have solved the problem.

As an example. The TC Hot Shot nipple with the Remington caps are a perfect fit.

Treso nipples also fits the CCI caps perfectly.

The only caps that will fit the nipples on a Ruger Old Army revolver are Remington # 10s. They work great.

With the Remington and Colts I use CCI's and I think I might get maybe 2-3 misfires per 100 shots.

Thanks for the input gents. When I get to the range I usually pop 2 caps with and unloaded rifle just to dry any moisture in the barrel. I'll know right there and then if they fit properly or if they are too tight. If they go off every time like the Remington's I'll know I'll have a winner. If they don't go off.........

Thanks,
Ray............... t up

It will take more than two shots to determine that Ray. Shoot a whole session to determine that.

You might get 10 shots in a row before a misfire. No good.

I normally finish a tin per session....

Been using RWS for a while too and they seem to work well.

Either RWS are made better than the other brands or they have better quality control and cull the bad ones. Either way I have never had a misfire with one. However, they have to be squeezed together slightly to fit tightly on most of my nipples.

I've found that I have to squeeze the S&B caps to fit nicely, that's why I went with the RWS caps.

You don't have a good fit if you need to squeeze them.

Just goes to show that all nipples are not machined the same even though they claim to be the right size for a certain cap.
