PostSubject: bought some bullets...........   June 30th 2014, 11:18 am

Dunno

Don't know if I ordered correctly but yesterday a shooter gave me a few mini bullets he casted himself and they surprised the hell out of me. With 85 grains of 2F I was able to hit what I was aiming at, 16# steel plate at 50 yards, without any problems. The plates were painted with yellow spray paint and I was the first shooter using them. I aimed dead center and they hit hit center but a little right a few inches. I knew that with the PRB that I needed to go left some. SO TODAY......................
I called TOW and ordered some. Don't know if I did it correctly but I figured, I'm using a .570 ball and a .015 patch. I added them up and came up with .585.....So, I don't if it was correct now mind you, I ordered a bag of Mini Springfield .585 bullets and some lub that I could rub on at the range.
WHAT DID YOU THINK? Will they go down my barrel without a problem? I hope so scratch

Confusing post Ray. Are you asking about the miniballs, or the PRB's?

Pete,
I'm asking if I ordered these miniballs in the wrong size. I shoot a .570 PRB and use a .015 patch. I don't know if it was right but added together you .585 going down the barrel with every load with the PRB.
So I ordered .585 Springfield mini balls and some lub to try out in my .58. What do ya think Question Will they work in my .58 Question

If your bore is .580 I don't see a .585 bullet fitting. It might being 100% lead.

The PRB fits, because the patch compresses.

The Minie is supposed to be like a slip fit to make it easier to load on a fouled barrel , the .585's might be a tad to big.

Originally, the minballs were a very loose fit. They would drop down the bore.

I was thinking the same thing about recoil. What does a .58 miniball weigh? Must be close to 600gr?

im also worried about the beech stock, it cracks, its finished for good. A minie ball was normally shot with around 50 to 60 grains of powder.

Depends on which bullet he ordered as they range in weight from 315 - 566gr and normally measure .575.

Why are you doing this Ray? The 270gr PRB will kill anything you hunt. Even if you hunted for elk.

You have to tell us why you're doing this Ray? Recoil will be ugly. I thought you were trying to keep recoil down?

Good decision Ray. That 270 gr ball is all you need to fill your freezer.  Wink

Ray, you say the PRB shoots to the left. You should be able to adjust that out with the sights?

One of the good things about a PRB is the windage shouldn't change at all when you change powder loads. Just the elevation should change.

That's not usually true when shooting conicals. Different powder loads with start to move them sideways.

My point is......get the PRB shooting straight, and you should have to touch it again when you try different loads.

In the old days PRB shooters didn't adjust their sights for different distances. They would use more powder for longer shots. No matter how much powder they added the PRB would continue to shoot straight. It my method too. At 25 yds I use light loads. At 100yds I use more powder instead of changing the sights, or using hold over. That way i'm always holding dead on the target. This would be for target shooting. For hunting it's not that practical, because you never know the distance to game before loading.

cowyboy hatoff

Thanks for all the help and first hand knowledge. It stopped me before I might have ruined my .58 and or my shoulder. I'm going to stick with the .570, .530, and .490 PRB in my rifles. I'm happy with the results that I'm getting but I thought I would try those mini's. Really didn't know or realize the consequences of going to the mini's Exclamation
IT'S PRB for my rifles.... :rtup

Heck, mini balls work well in rifles with shallow rifling and lower charges. The skirt expands with the ignition of the charge and seals the bore resulting in a tight-fitting conical bullet that is aerodynamically superior to a PRB. I disagree with the "stick to a PRB" theory. Shoot what is most accurate.

Ray, you already have the mini-balls so why not try them out? Use a light charge and move up until it gets inaccurate or the recoil is not conducive to comfortable shooting. Then YOU can decide what you want to use. Nothing can be killed too dead.

Bob...He has a slow twist, deep groove barrel. No reason a PRB shouldn't be more accurate than a conical. At the least it will be more than accurate for hunting.

I don't believe he has the miniballs. He cancelled the order.

He sure as hell doesn't need a 500+ bullet for whitetails.

Yes Pete, but he said the ones he tried were accurate. If nothing else I'd buy a dozen from the same guy and try them to see if they give better groups. Ray was using 85 grs of powder. That will kill any whitetail on the planet.

I'm glad I didn't invest a lot of money with this idea. No problem getting rid of these .577's. Some one at the range will take them with no problem.
I'm not going to try them out because I thought about using them for hunting. I'm not going to hunt hogs or deer with a 50/60 grain charge. I'll stick with the PRB.

Getting in this a little late but....
The numbers  change a little because the patch is compressed but you are not allowing for the fact that the patch thickness should be doubled. It is on both sides of the ball. Simplified, it would be .570 + .30.

My third muzzleloader, a high school graduation present, was a Navy Arms Zouave. I haven't shot it in years because Minnie balls are such a pain to cast, but I have two different molds for it. As far as I know the diameter is the same for both. If the Minnie you tried worked, chances are any others the same caliber will too.

My only concern using Minnies for hunting is that they are designed to fit the bore a tad on the loose side. I'd worry about the bullet sliding down the barrel unless something was done to make a snug fit.
In my case, I started out melting and painting on regular bullet lube (as used for sizer/lubricators). I also tried with some success a home made "cake cutter" made from a piece of 1/2 inch iron pipe. Both methods worked decent.....to the dismay of a lot of groundhogs.

The Zouave is a much more pleasant gun to shoot with heavy conicals than the Hawken.
