PostSubject: Smokepole Help   September 4th 2014, 6:41 pm

So been out of traditional smokepoles for a few years, but I am looking at getting another.
Been looking at the Lyman great plains in Flinter and percussion but am wondering which way to go.
My question: is the Frizzen and lock speed good on the Flinter ?

Now theres a name I havent seen on in a while!

It really depends on that flintlock you get. I had a couple that were dead nuts fast, the other, was a fizzle fuse bang shooter which I hated.

Can you get black powder locally? If not, percussion is the way to go as T7 and pyrodex will work well in the sidelock.

I personally like the percussion lyman rifles a lot more than their flinters.

Yea that was what I was thinking about the flinter, I would hate to order it and get it here and then have slow ignition. I have still have  three pounds of 3fg Swiss. But i figure mail order is my option for real black.I still have a couple inlines but have gotten bored with them. I would love a good flinter but am scared to roll the dice might be percussion then. Any other flinters that might be better in the same price range?

Get the flinter and have the flash hole liner changed and change the lock to a  Chambers
lock that will fit and you're set.

By the time you do all the changing, you might as well just buy a used custom rocklock. The T/C flint locks have a bad reputation but I haven't heard much about the Lyman. I know that Lyman's customer service is almost non-existent.

Lyman's made recently are not very good and have a poor reputation.

Why buy a rifle and start changing parts to making it reliable?

Given a choice of Lyman only, I would look for a good used percussion.

Seems like lots of folks are not happy the last couple of years with their products.  Their products were among the best, it is a shame.

What is more important than the brand name is stock fit and reliability.

Lyman fits me somewhat, T/C is better stock fit for me.

I would not buy a rifle I needed to start changing parts on to have it function.

I had to change the vent liner out on a new Lyman to an RMC, did make a difference, not happy working on a new rifle.  I had to work on the wedge keys, but that is mentioned in the manual.

I would not buy a rifle, new or used, unless I could examine it in person prior to buying.

Mail ordering a rifle is like mail ordering a bride.

East Texas has a lot in common with the Ukarine, it is remote.  Parts of it we head toward town to go hunting.

There is a dentist around here from Haiti. He thinks he is hot stuff. A Haitian wife wasn't good enough for him, he wanted a white wife so he "bought" one online from the Ukraine. Now he's up there with the pro football players ... he thinks.  crazy

Look at Jackie Brown on this site or TVM to see what a flinter in the white would cost.

From what I understand, you can order a gun from Jackie but he'll send you what he wants to send. scratch Buy one of his guns in stock rather than ordering one.

DonJose:

Good to see you back.  Third Generation Shooters Supply has the stainless Lyman Deerstalker with walnut stock for sale at $420.  Those guns are new old stock they have had for years.

The TC New Englander is a good round ball gun; although it is no longer made.  They usually sell for around $200-250.

If you really want quality get a custom build gun from a reputable builder even if it is more expensive.

Maybe I can put you in touch with the "importer", Jon. Laughing

Do you speak Russian? study

From what I gather, it's something like subdued white slavery. The Russian (or Ukrainian) mafia charge the women to market them to Americans. The girls want the perks of being an American so they agree. The mafia then sets them up as prostitutes so they can pay back the fee. When someone wants a mail-order bride, they send her over. She marries the guy until she can obtain permanent residency or cultivate a better meal ticket. Then she divorces the first guy. headslap

It's strictly "pay for play."
