bobby,
Is the firing pin bushing flush with stock. If not try to screw the bushing in nice and gentle like. Don't tighten it way down now just make it flush to start. How about the breech plug. Is that fingered tightened all the way down?
Does the MR close properly without a primer and or the breech plug? If so it's got to be the bushing /firing pin or the breech plug.
Hopefully some other members may have more ideas for you. GOOD LUCK

Ray.............

Try an PM FrontierGander. He may be able to help.........

Sounds like the headspace is adjusted which requires more of a snap to get it closed correctly.

Removing the firing pin bushing housing and see if there are shims inside there.

What primer are you using?

Ray yes the gun locks tight without a primer . The bushing is not flush.

Jon, when you say shims are you refering to thin little water looking like things? There are two of those thin one and one with a little more thickness. Primers are Wincester 209 (for shotshells).

Thanks guys for responding

It was probably setup for shorter primers. The Winchester are the longest ones. Take one of the shims out, and see how it closes.

That makes perfect sense then! Most likely it was adjusted for cci or fiocchi which are much shorter than the w209 primers.

Those washers comes in different thicknesses. You can determine which is which by measuring the thickness with calipers.

Most likely a .020 and a .005" thick shims.

PostSubject: ok guys thanks for the info   October 27th 2014, 8:23 pm

so i took the firng pin bushing apart and removed the "shims". the firing pin bushing is now flush and the gun locks and it fires 209 primers flawlessly.

now can someone tell me what all the "shimming" and specialization for blackhorn is all about? Will I be able to use wincester 209 primers for shotguns with my modified breech plug and blackhorn to get a decent group?

thanks again for your help. glad I didn't have to send my gun in.

The shims set the headspace. You probably didn't need to remove all the shims.

It seals up the primer blow by. CVA runs a loose fit on primers so you can use all brands without a  problem. The problem is, that looseness causes a big mess of primer carbon on the face of the frame.

Thanks Jon

so should i just fire the gun at the range a bunch and see what i get for buildup, or should i put one of the shims back and see if it will still lock? In other words does one want it as tight as possible as long as it still locks closed?

Bobby, check this thread out and there are 2 videos in it. They are the How to videos on installing the shims.
