PostSubject: The .46 cal Girandoni Air Rifle    January 16th 2015, 6:35 am

This is the air rifle that Lewis and Clark took on their expedition and AMAZED the Indians!!!  Very interesting. It takes 1500 strokes to pump this rifle to full pressure, after which it could shoot more than 40 .46 cal. round balls,  each of which can blast a clean hole through a 1 inch pine board at 100 yards.

This is a VERY interesting  gun ! O.K. how many of you very gun knowledgeable folks out there even knew that a rifle like this ever existed, especially way back then?  I hope you enjoy this like I did.

This video is with sound and great on full screen.

Really interesting Joe. It's amazing that an air gun protected the Lewis and Clack Expedition.
Thanks for posting.

I am amazed with the craftmenship of that rifle. I knew that they took an air rifle with them on their trekk, but I knew nothing else about it, until now.

I've read about the air rifle that Lewis and Clark had on their expedition. The original gun was a flintlock, from the video it liiks like it may have been converted to a percussion.  Dennis Priddy, a fellow that I know here in Michigan made an air rifle that's really neat. Here's the link

Lewis & Clark's crew had a hard time killing grizzlies with their black powder guns. I'd hate to be the one stuck with the air rifle when a griz came calling.  Shocked
