PostSubject: REFINISHING........   Sun Feb 08, 2015 6:54 pm

Trying my hand at refinishing a rifle stock Shocked  i've got a White 98 Elite Hunter .451 that I have never liked the finish on. It had a high gloss varnish over a greenish gold tinted stain. I stripped the old fiinsh & then inspected the wood condition. Pretty good shape over all. What I found under that crap was a grey/black pattern. A beauty in my eyes!

I made sure all of the stripping agent was removed & wet sanded with 400 grit after another washing & drying I tacked the surface & began. I was a bit nervous!

I applied one coat of ZAR dark mahogany oil stain, let it set for 2 minutes & wiped off the excess. I was rewarded with what I think is a beautiful finish. I'm gonna let it dry & cure for a day & then start applying top coats of Formby's Tung oil. I will polish as needed with 0000 steel wool to try & keep a satin finish that still lets the grain & the laminate show thru.

Here are a few before, during, & after (so far) pics

It's funny Jon because I just didn't see that coming at all but I am THRILLED! Hopefully a few coats of the Tung oil & a light steel wool polish & hopefully the grain & the color will really stand out. Everything I've read says it's next to impossible to refinish a laminate stock, but so far.........

Dave
It's really amazing isn't it?!! I have always preferred wood stocks & especially laminates so I'm very happy with this project so far. I don't use this rifle often, but it is fun to shoot. With it's 1-20 twist it is very accurate whether I'm shooting a 200gr SST or a 465 grain chunk of lead Smile

Bob......I honestly don't know. I've been thinking about sending Doc White an email to find out what kind of wood they used in their laminated stocks.

With the dark mahogany stain I was expecting to maybe have too much of a red hue in it but I really like the color - Greg

Lots of those gray/green laminates were referred to as a hunting "camouflage" stock.
They look OK but I like the brown ones better.

Wow, that's a great change!  I have a TC Omega with the same greenish stock and mine is showing some delamination on the thinnest surface layers from getting soaked repeatedly.  It needs to be refinished and while I am at it am going to try darkening it like yours.  Probably will need to go with a more 'filling ' final coat than oil though.  Thanks for the info.

Best thing I can tell you is take the time to do it right & post some pics of your progress. I've actually enjoyed doing this,
