I don't have a turkey call, and don't plan on buying one. Lets see if I can get anywhere without calling. I have a month to get it done.

Not a whole month. I'll have a deer hunt in the middle of the turkey hunt. I'll devote the deer hunt to just deer.

Calling turkeys puts the thrill into turkey hunting. It's one of the oldest methods of hunting for them. It's challenging and exciting to know that you're fooling a big gobbler into thinking you're a hot hen. Same as cow calling a bull elk or grunting in a bull moose.

You slip into the woods before daylight while the birds are still sleeping on the roost. As soon as you hear the first gobble you try to get close to where they are before they fly down. A few soft clucks on a call and the gobbler will usually answer. Then you stop calling because he knows where you are and when he does fly down he just might fly your way and start looking for you. That is unless he's "henned up" meaning he already has hens with him in which case he'll go where they go.

My wing bone call is home make not store bought. I also have a cedar box call that I made years ago....again, part of the challenge.

I'm funny that way. I've hunted elk for 60 years, and have never called one. I have a pretty good success rate using still hunting into bedding areas. I do the same for deer.

Too old to change my ways now. I don't want to trick the game. I'd prefer to sneak in like a cat hunts. It's what I enjoy. That's the most important thing for me. The hunt is everything for me, but it has to be my way. As it should be for everybody.

As long as you're enjoying yourself and having fun that's great, besides you know what they say, "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" an you're almost as old a dog as I am... Laughing
