PostSubject: Accura MR Breech Plug   April 22nd 2015, 6:25 pm

I just received a new MR today, and the BP is black. All of it, not just the outside. Even the face that is in the combustion chamber. Does anybody know if it has the Nitride treatment, or is it something else?

I'll call CVA, but thought i'd ask to see if anybody knows first.

My breech is too.  I'd like to know as well.  I'm replacing mine with a western powder 209 breech that is silver, but would have preferred a nitride breech.

Tony, send you nitride BP to Carlos and have him do the vent liner to it, he did my 45 cal Kodiak and the  Nitride BP that came with the Optima, and they both work great,

That's good to know. I was going to have Ron do my BP, and he was worried about it being hard on his tool bits if it was Nitride. Has anybody confirmed it is Nitride?

I need to call CVA today, and find out for sure.

Speaking of Nitride. I just watched a shooting program, and they were talking about the Nitride barrels they were using. They said S&W has tested them to 17,000 rounds (CF) with no wear to speak of.

That's some tough stuff.

Ok, I just talked to Ken at CVA. He said they made them black with some process that he wasn't sure of at the Bergara factory. He was sure that it wasn't Nitride though.

Maybe some sort of anodizing, but i'm guessing. It seems pretty tough whatever it is.

I talked to Western Powder before about a Nitride 209 plug...they said it was not in their plans..the Nitride makes the metal very hard and the breech would not mate to barrel during first application and something about both threads being nitride could cause cracking...also here is a post from a gunsmith who put a muzzle brake on a Accura...

I just installed a brake on a cva with that coating and it was hard stuff!! Carbide cutter, 70rpm and the slowest feed was the only way it wouldn't vibrate like crazy. Not good when the customer is standing there watching and surely getting worried. I don't know if melonite can be machined with carbide but the cva coating barely could with my equipment.

Melonite is another trade name for the coating
