PostSubject: Open sights on CVA MR   June 23rd 2015, 9:12 pm

In my new member intro I told the saga of using a mountain rifle in Colorado with open sights. Once I realized the problem I had with mounting open sights on the rifle I went to my gun smith and he made shims using a weaver scope base. They were mounted on the rifle and then the open sights were mounted to the shims. It wasn't very pretty but they worked extremely well. Here they are.

Seems like it would be fairly simple for CVA to offer a set of open sights built on a high frame.

I see nothing wrong with what your smith did here , I see thinking out side the box worked good ,,CVA sites are ok but most guys are swapping them for better ones ,The fiber front pin fell out of mine the first outing ,,,

I would have just made the front sight, and used a peep sight in the rear scope holes.

I want to use a peep on the Accura V2 or maybe look into that sight that Frontier Gander was using a while back.
Pete, what peep would you use?

a taller front sight wouldnt work, tried that and its the rear sigh that needs to be lifted on the MR in order to see sights at all.

Not pretty but it gets the job done for sure.

I used the factory durasights but used plastic shims and had to use a clear epoxy under the front to make sure it didnt wiggle left to right due it being so narrow.

I was using the stock sights for awhile, but I was down pretty hard on the stock.

Muley, I'm ready to try the peep rail that you had suggested a while back on my Accura V2. I'm also considering using the Warne Quick Detach rings, http://www.eabco.net/Warne-Quick-Detach-Rings-Black--All-QD-Heights-to-Fit-1-Tube_p_13574.html for mounting the Leupold 4x12 with 40MM objective. They say that with these rings you can reattach the scope and not loose zero but I would certainly check to make sure before ever trusting that in a hunting situation.

The rings come in low, med, high, xtra high and ultra high. I'm thinking the low or med would probably be enough for the 40 MM objective to clear but just would like to be sure of the correct height before placing the order.

All input and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks
Glenn

I missed this. I wasn't ignoring you. Did you get it worked out?

I seem to remember trying a low mount and it didn't work. It cleared the barrel ok, but the hammer hit the scope. A different scope might have worked.

I posed the question to EABCO and their response was the "high" mount so I went with what they said and placed the order. Everything has been received but I haven't mounted anything yet and really in no hurry. All of this is just in case my son-in-law and I go to Colorado for another "elk experiment". Maybe next year.

Thanks
Glenn

I always thought the med mount was just right. I'm sure that's what comes on the MR when it comes with a scope.
