PostSubject: .50 New Englander And Conicals   July 2nd 2015, 12:54 pm

Some time ago; many months ago actually, i decided to run some tests on  the use of sub bases with conicals.  Jon was kind enough to send me some sub bases.

i tried 320 grain and 370 grain Maxi-Balls with and without the sub bases.   With or without sub bases, the results with 777 powder were not good.   My New Englander  does not like that powder.   Using 80 grains of Black MZ powder,  accuracy with the sub bases was marginally better than without.

Distance:   75 yards.  The bullseye is 3" in diameter.
Gun:        TC .50 New Englander
Sights:     Fire sights
Bullet:      320 Train TC Maxi-Ball with sub base
Powder:    80 grains of Black MZ
Cap:         #11 Winchester

Wind:  Directly at my back; 10 mph gusting to 20 mph.

Hold:  6 O'clock

The firing range at Ft. Sill is covered with a camouflage sun screen.  My old eyes had trouble seeing the front sight clearly.

I settled on the 320 grain Maxi-Ball because the 370 grain Maxi is a loose fit in the bore of that gun.  i'm afraid it would come off the powder.   Both those Maxi-Balls knock the snot out of big hogs.

That's not bad for 75 yards under those conditions. It's about how I shoot with open sights under ideal conditions.

It's called old eyes syndrome. My shots with an unscoped muzzleloaders are limited to 75 yards or less. i've passed on shots closer than 75 yards when conditions were not right.

Can't argue with that! Not bad at all IMO. I haven't seen a 320gr maxi around these parts in years.
