PostSubject: Tree rat season starts tomorrow   August 14th 2015, 8:06 pm

I'm unemployed for the first time in 22 years ( by my own choosing - I quit), and I'll be in a woods that I haven't been in for about the same amount of time.
The North Star West Officer's fusil, along with its dedicated pouch and horn, are near the front door, ready to be grabbed on the way to the car.
Knowing that I will be doing something I enjoy without the worry of EVER working another day for a company I had come to despise has me feeling about as good as I have felt in years.
The skeeters won't even bother me.

You'll certainly have a little more pep in your step from the sound of it! I wish you well on a new beginning.

Retire already. You're the age I was when I retired. It scared me for about 3 weeks until I realized I was having a ball.

Yeah, that' what my attorney said too. But it is not really feasible.
I have no savings to speak of, and I'm having to file bankruptcy due to going from a decent income to no income. There is no way I could live on Social Security alone. I took two weeks vacation before I quit, and I quit a week ago tomorrow, so I have sort of been retired for three weeks. But I can't do it for very long. A nephew says he can get me on where he works, and, while it will require more driving than I'd like, it pays decent. If that falls through, I'm practicing saying "Would you like fries with that?

The hunt today was sort of a bust.
It was raining this morning, so I went out to the shop and turned wood for a while instead shooting at it.
The afternoon was okay so I grabbed the gun and headed for the woods.
Remember that I said I hadn't been in that particular woods in years? It has changed a tad. It used to be fairly open, with very little underbrush. Now, even though there are just as many trees as there ever were, it is very hard to get through large parts of it. It would be impossible if not for the cattle and deer paths. Today was mostly a scouting trip with the gun along just in case. I saw four that were too far away to even think of taking a shot. The one I might have had a chance of getting made a brief appearance at the base of a tree fifty feet away before flying up the trunk and vanishing into a huge growth of wild grapes. When I first saw him (and he, I) I was sitting at the base of a tree with the gun across my lap pointing the other direction. It was like he knew I couldn't bring the gun around as fast as he could disappear, and if squirrels knew how to flip humans off, I'm sure he would have done so.
Oh well.
I know where they are cutting and tomorrow is another day.

Sometimes change can be liberating. Looks like that is the case for you.
My wife and I took a 50% household income cut to take the job I have been in for the last 30 years. Best decision we ever made.
Best wishes for the future,
Ron
