This buck was quartering to when shot with patched round ball. Distance was about 70 yards; outside my comfort zone. Gun was the .54 New Englander.

Wind was in my face. When the smoke cleared the buck was standing about ten yards from where he was shot. He made a few steps, tottered and fell over. Waited about 20 minutes and approached the deer.

This deer was shot way too low. Luckily the ball or a piece of the ball took out the heart.
This could have lead to a badly wounded and long suffering deer.

The bullet entrance:

The exit:

Will check the zero of the gun before hunting with it again. i have my quota of bucks for this year: Now after the does.

Boy, that was close. Another inch or so lower and you would only have a patch of white hair to eat ...  which is more than I've got this year.

That's why heart shots are always chancy. Lung shots are much better odds.

Hey Falcon,  I wouldn't dwell too much on "what could of been", I would dwell on the fact that you harvested a nice buck deer with a patched round ball at 70 yards.  Congratulations on some tasty back straps!!

Thanks guys.

Checked the zero of the gun today.   With a 6 o'clock hold the first ball landed near the center of the 4" bullseye.   The three shot group measured just under 3":  Minute of deer.

I'd take a steady shot at 70 yards... assuming I'd been practicing.
That is a doable shot - especially with your shot grouping.

I agree with Joe and FG. Your practice paid off. Grats on an earned kill.
If you had not known your gun and your skills, it could have gone south,
but you did. I think better of you for worrying about it. Now, enjoy your
venison. I'm still skunked. tongue
