Interesting site. I'm on the side that thinks the whole story is exaggerated. I'd still like to see the movie. Even though the story is fiction, everything else is suppose to be true of the Mountain Man era.

There's a movie out now. Mountain man all the way. I think it's like the movie " A MAN IN THE WILDERNESS " except this time it's about Hugh Glass not Sam Bass. Could be the same thing scratch

Man In The Wilderness was loosely based on Hugh Glass. I've watched it 3-4 times now. Whenever it pops up I watch it. I can say that about any mountain man movie.

As for the story about Hugh Glass being true? I don't think so other than the fact that he got mauled by a grizzly. It makes a good story though.

way to much documentation on it for it to be fake, including from army officers and other mountain men.

We all know what Jedediah Smith did when he got mauled, including leading his group after being ripped apart.

Tom Fitzpatrick is another that wondered lost for months, starved almost to death before being found by a few hunters.

Things get exaggerated over time Jon. Even during the time it happen the stories would change the more it was passed on.

No matter though. It's a great story, and i'd like to believe it's true. The mountain men were tough bastards, and who knows what they're capable of?

I think he got mauled, and might have been left for dead, and then got back on his own. What's hard to believe is the distance they say he crawled/hobbled.

that was total distance he traveled to track down Bridger and the other guy.  I believe the actual travel on dragging/hobbling was something like 250 or 300 miles to the fort.

You believe that was true? That's a long ways on a horse in those days. Let alone crawling/hobbling. It would take forever.

Anyway, it's better to believe there's some truth to it if we're to enjoy the movie. Even though we know Hollywood put their spin on it.

It's like believing Jerimiah Johnson is accurate. We know better, but it's still good entertainment.

From what I've discovered is that there's so little factual information reference this subject that discussing it is a moot issue! Glass...or whomever left no notes....or if so, none that have been discovered at this date! But America right now needs a few heroes and he may as well be one of 'em!! :suhlute Laughing
