PostSubject: Too Old for This Crap   May 22nd 2016, 9:16 am

Friday evening I was checking on some newborn calves when I saw one of my yearling bulls dragging a rear leg. He had a couple of circular cuts around it where he got tangled in some wire and it was cut and swollen. I got a syringe loaded with tetracycline, a wire cutter, and a lariat but it was after dark by then.
Yesterday, I found him and for the first time in my life, I managed to throw a loop on his good back leg. I was a "heeler" at last. However, that joy soon faded when he snapped off the fencepost I had snubbed him to. Then I had to play cowboy; he dragged me around until I got the rope around my butt and dug my heels in. That took out his good leg and he went down where I could give him 2 injections and try to check for any wire that might still be around the leg. I couldn't examine the whole thing because he landed on that foot when he went down but it appeared free of wire.

It was about 85 degrees by the time I finished and it took me twice as long to recover my breath and get my heartbeat back to normal than it took the yearling. I have to give him another dose in a couple of days. Maybe the aches will be gone by then?

Playing cowboy is for kids!

Get a dart rifle, some knock out juice, and a supply darts.  Much easier and lots safer.  Even for them young cowpokes.

I have a 32 gauge shotgun modified for darts. The trouble is it's almost impossible to guess ahead of time where the animal will be when you shoot. The wrong charge can inject too deeply if the charge is too strong and a charge that is too weak will not penetrate tough hide. It used to work fine when I was raising blackbuck and mouflon for a sedative but an occasional animal would go into shock and die.

Tetracycline is a drug that should be injected subcutaneously not intramuscularly and no more than 5 cc. per injection site. If I can get the cows into the chute and head-catch, it's a simple matter but this one wasn't cooperating due to his injury.

I enjoyed the story. I bet you were sore.

I wrangled our cows when I was young. I left the injections to the vets.
But, I did chase 'em, band 'em, milk 'em, feed 'em, birth 'em, field dress a few of 'em...

Once, when I was very young (11?), my Dad had placed a heifer in an isolated
pen. She was gonna be sent off for slaughter. My friend and I decided that
this was an excellent time to have our first try at milking.

I got kicked and pushed and smashed into a wall.

That heifer felt her dignity was being assaulted and vigorously resisted my advances.
I was not able to catch any of the milk. But, I could get it from the teat. My friend
went home.

I told my parents about trying to milk the heifer and they LAUGHED.
They informed me that it was impossible for a heifer to give milk because
a bull had not gotten to her.

Being 11 and not understanding the 'sacred cow' status of the 'holy virgin heifer theory,' I insisted that
I had seen milk and they laughed even more. When I would not quit saying what I saw, they dismissively
gave me a cup and told me to go prove it.

I got kicked and pushed and smashed into a wall again.

But, this time, I was determined. The sting of laughter can sometimes produce grit.

I milked that heifer by myself and produced my results to suddenly quiet adults.
They went out with me and made me milk it in front of them. So, in front of a small audience?

I got kicked and pushed and smashed into a wall again.

She was a bit calmer now or I was more skillful. I produced milk quickly.

Immaculate conception was discussed, but that 'heifer' was a poser.
She was a bit of a secret tramp.

Apparently, a neighbor Romeo bull had gotten in AND out without anybody knowing
about it because that girl was pregnant.

I was badly bruised and battered by this time. But, plans were changed and she was
not sent to slaughter and was allowed to calf.

And, nobody ever laughed at me about the livestock again. Very Happy

PS.  Except about that vicious rooster... But, that is another story.

I went back out today and found the bull under some cedars. He was much better. Maybe the swelling will be gone in a few days with one more session of shots.

He may end up being a one legged humper and that would be a sight. But I hope he heals and the injury will not be permanent. Human injuries are bound to happen when you work with animals.

I give it right back. It really upsets them when I bow my neck, look sideways at them, and "paw" the dirt with my foot. They usually look away and walk off.

Polled Limousin.
Herefords have white faces and are a poor choice in Florida because they're bad about getting eye cancer from the constant sun.

I grew up on a cattle ranch. When age 8 my grandfather bought me a new Daisy air rifle...that old pump kind! I climbed a tree in the pasture one afternoon and when the stock came to water.....I discovered that when a bull is shot in the nuts with a BB....the rodeo is on! Old Prince whirled and knocked Bully Boy (another bull smaller than he was) down and the two fought for ten minutes! If my grandfather had known I'd shot that bull in the nuts he'd have flamed my azz!! :Hide :scucks

I enjoyed that read. Boy! It sure would be nice to fatten up a couple of steers again.
I doubt my Home Owners Association would be too pleased about that.

Cows eating hay is a very relaxing thing to watch.

And, you have French hornless cows. La Moo!

If you fatten a steer, use Angus. Limousins are real lean with a long loin, they are supposed to be healthier due to lower fat content but they don't taste as good as an Angus ...  they don't bring as much at the sale either. No

I LOVE Angus...

I wonder... I will do a bit of looking around for a spot to raise 'em.
Maybe I can get lucky and rent grazing nearby. I won't hold my breath,
but it's worth a good look around.

The last ones I fattened were Holstein calves the dairy sold for $75 dollars a pop.
They were not as tasty, but boy were they affordable. We ate well and they paid for
my first semester in college from the sale of the beef.

Thanks for the tip.

Update:

I sold this bull last week. He fetched just under a grand. I'm glad I patched him up. Very Happy
