PostSubject: Man Attacked by 300 lb. Gator    June 23rd 2016, 5:01 pm

This guy lives about 15 miles from me. He did what most of us crackers do when we encounter a gator on our property, he shot it. Trouble is he evidently doesn't have enough experience in where to shoot them. It's illegal, of course, unless you have a permit but waiting for a certified trapper and a game warden can take up to a week depending on whatever excuse they give you.

This gator was harassing/attacking his horses so he tried to eliminate the threat.

Snakes and gators give me the creeps.

They just showed this on the local news. They gave the location and it's only 5 miles from me. Time to check my pond for gators. :shh

It is pretty easy to find gator pelts for sale with legal tags.
At least the small ones.

The dang things are everywhere... the only reason
they are not OFF the endangered species list is because
they 'look' like the fresh water Florida crocodile which IS
endangered.

Seriously, though? I find it MUCH harder to determine sex than
species. Crocs are very easy to ID. Gender? Not so much.

I wonder how many 2 year olds we have to feed the local wildlife
before we can take action? You know I heard people complaining
because 7 gators were killed from the Disney lake while looking for
the boy? Seriously? Where are your priorities?

And, yeah. Check your pond, Bob. But, those suckers move so don't
lower your guard. I felt better before knowing a full grown man tried
to kill the thing with a gun and then got attacked. I was happier believing
he was just ambushed.

I have a tagged legal gator skin on my wall.

Bob can't apply for a permit?

Nonresidents can apply but the cost is prohibitive .. heck, the resident cost is prohibitive.

"What license do I need to be able to hunt alligators? And how do I obtain it?
Hunters need an alligator trapping license/harvest permit, which costs $272 for residents, $22 for those
possessing a Florida Resident Persons with Disabilities Hunting and Fishing License, and $1,022 for
nonresidents.
This license comes with 2 hide validation (CITES) tags and allows for the take of 2 alligators."

http://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/managed/alligator/harvest/

It allows 2 gators total, you have to take a course on how to hunt/kill them, and the permit is only good in a certain area for a limited time .. about a week. You can sell the hides and meat to a middle man and maybe make a little money if the gators are 9+ ft. long (this is a guess on my part).
No bait is allowed so it's gigging, archery or snagging with a salt-water rod. You can kill them when you get them to the side of the boat with a bang-stick (no regular gun).

PostSubject: Re: Man Attacked by 300 lb. Gator    June 24th 2016, 8:35 am

Bob gets his info from the Florida Wildlife source. I confess, my info came
from second hand jawing at the firing line.

"only good in a certain area for a limited time"
Yeah, this makes the deer and hog hunting WMAs look easy to understand.

"No bait is allowed so it's gigging, archery or snagging with a salt-water rod. You can
kill them when you get them to the side of the boat with a bang-stick (no regular gun)."

Yep. They make you get close enough to poke it with a stick that has a charge at the end
of it. You poke it with a stick! Seriously?! I have to poke an angry alligator with a stick? All
this tech available and 'poking with a stick' is what I am left with?

"When hunting Florida alligator, hunters must wear hunter orange, large floppy clown shoes,
Muley's dress, and have one hand tied behind them at all times."

Yes, I am pretty certain that is on the Florida Wildlife web site. rabbit

If you find one in your pool, under your car, or it eats your dog?
You can't kill it. You have to call an agency to remove the 'nuisance gator.'
then, mostly, they just dump it into Lake Jessup which has the highest
number of gators per square foot in the state. (Or, so I am told.)
Nuisance? I ain't taking about it using a stereo too loud!
I am talking about teeth.

Here is a gator that stole a watermelon from a field...
They can be brazen.

Here are the 2016 Alligator hunting regulations for Florida if you want a look.

Bob,
So a gator is legally safe in your pond?

Legally, yes, unless he attacks my cows.

That gator hunting is like moose hunting here. About $250 for resident and a little over $2000 for non residents.

Which is why I never hunted for moose. Plus, it takes 20 years to get enough points.

Bob,

Can you legally keep the skin if you take a gator that was attacking a cow?

Muley, I'm sure Florida would sell you as many moose licenses as you want for $2000/each. scratch

I'm sure Colorado will sell you as many gator tags as you want too. Price is negotiable.

No.
A state licensed trapper would be called and he would sell the meat commercially and maybe sell the hide back to you if they're allowed to keep the skins. You have to have a CITES tag to legally possess an alligator hide. However, I see alligator heads for sale all over the place and hey don't have tags affixed to them so I'm not real clear on all that.
Asking a local (Florida) taxidermist would probably be the best way to find out.

You guys...
Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Yes, to all Bob said. I would add that I heard that the gator products like
heads, teeth, and claws that are for sale in tourist shops all over Florida are
actually sourced product from alligator farms. I was told they come from Louisiana.

I have wondered how they could enforce/know the difference if this is true.

I'd feed the dead gators to the other gators.

Florida has an over abundance of alligators. When gators and other critters attack people and livestock its time for action.

I remember the picture of the gator with the "watermelon" but then it was a rubber ball, what is it?

They use to sell small stuffed "gators" in Florida TT's, but they were really a Caiman from South America.
