Thank you for taking the incentive to put up those best wishes!

Please stay safe and don't take undue risks with this storm - and check in when you can. At least there is some lead time to get to higher ground.
Ron

Ron, there is no high ground in Florida.

The new storm track shows it hugging the east coast of Fla. and going north to the Ga./SC border before looping out into the ocean and circling back to Fla.
They predict it staying a cat. IV hurricane all along the coast where most of the people live. We are under a tropical storm warning where I live.

Great to know you and your family made out safely.

Haven't heard anything from Kentucky Colonel recently. I hope he and his family are safe and comfortable.

Sorry for the radio silence. We had our hands full.

We boarded up the house when it became clear it was serious. It sped up and we missed our
safe evacuation window. Next year, I am going into training for hurricane season. I'm bushed.

Nice to know we were remembered. Hilljack also reached out to me. Thanks, guys.
And, thanks all for the good thoughts. We had a lot of people praying for us and it seemed to work, but holy cow...

Too dang close. It shot up to Cat 4 and sped up. Then, at the last minute it jogged about 60 miles east and dropped
about 25 mph which was enough to keep us from any real harm. We're 50 miles from the coast. Too close to that kind
of storm. But, we got relatively minor damage, debris, power outages, and local flooding. We did not even see a tornado!
Others were not so lucky just a little further to our east and north.

St. Augustine is under water. (Remember those pics I posted? That area totally flooded.)
Parts of Jacksonville got creamed. Sections of HWY 1 have collapsed into the sea. At least two piers
have been lost. (Disney World closed for like the 4th time in history.)

The wife and I are still cleaning up. I got the boards down today. I deal with the debris tomorrow.
I am so daggone sore all-over... But, very, very grateful. Hurricanes suck.

Good night, all.

That is a relief to know you and your family are OK!
I was concerned when we didn't hear from you for a while.
Did the water and flooding drive any nasty critters (I'm thinking snakes and 'gators) up to your area?

Best Regards,
Ron

Glad your ok Colonel. Cant imagine dealing with that kind of a storm. The weather can sure make one feel helpless because there isnt a damn thing you can do except bitch and wait it out. Seen a few hailstorms with baseball size hail and you just sit there and watch mother nature beat your stuff to death. Hope your clean up isnt to bad. Al

I'm sorry you guys got hit.
We didn't get anything from it except 30 mph winds and a couple of inches of rain. Power never went out either. We were in a narrow zone that all the feeder bands missed. It was worse to the west of us than here.

I guess this makes up for getting 2 direct hits in 2004.

PostSubject: Re: ....... HURRICANE MATTHEW.............   October 9th 2016, 9:42 am

Thanks, guys.

We learned about hurricanes in 2004 so we were prepped for this one... and very lucky. Charley
made us BELIEVE.

This pic was posted from near Jax Beach about 16 hours ago. Yes that's either a shark or a dolphin on someones front porch.
I believe it is a shark.

The following three shots are of HWY 1 in Flagler County... not too far away.

This shot is from St. Augustine. My wife and I walk the dog down this main street all the time.
The fort is directly behind the photographer (yes, there was flooding there, too) and this is a main
street. The last restaurant we ate in is on this street.

So, to answer RonC, we did not see any unusual critters. In fact, for about 36 hours it was insanely still. No birds, squirrels, or varmints of any kind were to be seen or heard. This was unusual. Even the neighborhood ducks were no where to be seen. People had evacuated or were under curfew. No motors in the distance. Jets were grounded. It was a bit erie. The only animal activity  to be noticed were tree frogs and their singing. They buzzed excitedly at odd hours of the day.

There was no wind at first for a long time. My humidity readings were at 99%. We got bands of rain ranging from light to heavy. I measured 6 inches of rain before the storm took out my weather station when the winds finally came. The worst of it hit between 0700 and 0900, but it stayed hazardous out for a long time. That was when we lost power. We stayed hunkered down and did not tempt fate.

Not like this idiot.

Anyhow, that is some of the more interesting imagery.
Now, I am off to deal with the last of the debris and put the Halloween decorations back up.

UPDATE:

My wife and I had to travel to St. Augustine for business. We made a weekend out of it.
We walked the dog down that flooded bit in the pic above in this thread.

I am happy to report that I have never seen a city rebound like this one. While there is still the odd
building being gutting and repaired, most of the historic downtown is on it's feet and booming! It takes
a sharp eye to see the impact.

The Fort looks unscathed even though I know parts of it had water and the dry moat was full. The harbor protection and a really over-built sea wall that I had not noticed before protected the structure. Plus, well, it is a big ole, centuries old, bad-ass fort. Time, cannon, and hurricanes apparently have no impact.

This pic was taken on St. George Street which is about 600 yards away from the street flooding pictured above. I took one form the street and tried to get the fort, but it was terrible.

So, go if you have a mind to. You will enjoy it. They are still firing the cannon from the fort and the tourist 'pirate' ships in the bay.
