PostSubject: NEW Traditions Prairie Hawken Rifle   January 6th 2017, 9:16 pm

Was on muzzle-loaders website looking for a kentucky flinter pistol and ran across this instead headslap

Looks like there is a market for TRADITIONAL muzzleloaders afterall, otherwise, they would not be introducing new ones!

I REALLY like that rear sight! Thats awesome for my long range shooting I like to do now and then. BUT, I know I'll have to cut a new dovetail and move it forward a few inches. Knowing how to place my rear sight has really spoiled me

They also made them in flinter too. Looks like a fancier lock plate and a new frizzen spring design.

The Flintlock Traditions® Prairie Hawken Rifle is modeled after rifles used during the Rocky Mountain fur trading era of the 1830's. The Prairie™ Hawken rifle is an excellent addition to any shooters collection. These guns were the trusted companions of fur traders and trappers who roamed the rugged western frontier. The Prairie Hawken is a 2-tenon .50 caliber sidelock rifle with flintlock ignition.

The Prairie Hawken features a double-set trigger in an oversized glove-fitting, trigger-guard with finger rest. The rifle also comes complete with classic blackened sliver hardware and a  28" octagonal blued barrel. The rifle features a 1:48" twist and an overall length of 44.5" and 14.5" length of pull.

Another one of those 50 caliber rifles thats just not good enough. Why is 58 caliber discriminated against.

That's the part we always wonder about and I finally got an answer.. In order to make a .54 or .58cal, they have to submit a minimum order of 5,000 barrels to Ardesa before they would build them.

Man I would think 54 caliber would sell as good as a 50. I see 54 always being of higher reccomendation over the 50 for big game.

I wonder why they aren't 1-66" twist. It is good to see these sidelocks being made again though.

If you are shooting super heavy duty charges of black powder, the 1:66 twist is a good idea, but the original hawken rifles were in fact 1:48 twist. I've had excellent luck with the traditions barrels with 1:48 twist. Im shooting 90gr equiv. in my st.louis hawken with the 2nd and 3d shot close to touching at 100 yards.

Looks just about like my old Mountain rifles - guess Traditions moved the model name out on the grasslands a bit...  Glad to see the profile back available
Of course the Traditions Mountain Rifle you reviewed is very similar as well! Still like the style, weight, balance and well I've had them a long time...

What this rifle needed was to come in 54-cal / 1:66 twist with 2-tenons.
