Yeah, the 3-53 Detroit is a neat engine.   Love the sound of the two cycle Detroit engines.   i installed
a couple 4-53 engines in trucks.

Problem is the 3-53 engine  is awful heavy - over 900 pounds.  The US Army Gama Goat had a special aluminum block 3-53 engine that was much lighter.  Some of those engines were sold as surplus after the vehicle went obsolete.

I had a '69 back in the '70s. 383 and 440. 4.11 gears. About 4.5 mpg.
I bet mine was WAY more fun to drive.

Well, it's different. It would be better in my Jeep. I'd love that kind of gas mileage.

I get 16 in my CJ5. That's not bad considering it has a 3 speed and avg speed of 70mph.

My TJ gets the same thing, but it's lifted with 33's now. That should have killed the gas mileage but didn't seem to.

When I had it lifted more with Dana 60's and 38's on it I was getting 8 mpg. That sucked!

There's been talk about Chrysler offering a diesel in the Jeep for years.
Still nothing yet. Although they are getting ready for a new Wrangler coming out, so who knows?
