PostSubject: Whitehots vs other options   July 29th 2017, 4:42 am

My first muzzleloader arrives Friday; CVA Optima 26" nitride w/ Nikon. My new hunting area allows only ML or shotgun. I choose to go ML for the season. I picked up some Hornady XTP 50 cal 240 Gr Sabots and was thinking about using 2 whitehots. What are the pros and cons? Also what primer should I use?

My brother purchased a box of White Hots to compare to the Pyrodex pellets some years back.  There wasn't any noticeable difference as far as we could tell using two Pyrodex pellets vs two White hot pellets.  He swabbed after each shot to see if the barrel was cleaner and no difference.  The only difference we seen in the White Hots were ; the pellets are white and a little longer.   Rolling Eyes

He also called the company to try and get some ballistic testing info to see if they determined whether or not there was any improved performance over the Pyrodex pellets and they didn't have any.

White Hots can be hard to light:   Those pellets cost two friends big bucks.   One of the guns was a CVA Mag Hunter using 209 primers.   The other was a Knight, also using 209 primers.  Pyrodex pellets have the black powder igniter on one end and they light easier.

Con - Less pellets for the same amount of money for T7 pellets, Less velocity. Still have to swab between shots to get the next shot down the bore.

IMO, I'd honestly take a look at Blackhorn209, along with the blackhorn209 breech plug. Its completely worth the time to swap the plug out.

I hunted with them last year using a 250 grain Aerolite... no complaints. This year I'm shooting 110 grains of Black MZ and a 270 grain Powerbelt Platinum,,, my Accura really likes this load and I think it's going to be a killer! Good luck!  Cool

That's the best way Dave. You'll find that everyone has their favorite loads for their front stuffers and most will be slightly different from the next one. It's all good. Like you mentioned, that's all part of the fun!  So load up and see what you like!

Isn't that the truth, if you get a group together and ask any kind of questions you'll be amazed of how others view the subject. Exclamation  Idea
