PostSubject: Coming to you from Cologne, Germany   July 31st 2017, 3:19 am

Just stole away for a few moments to send this email. Heading off to Koblenz, Germany tomorrow.

I will visit this site every few days to watch the typical excitement and drama. OK, maybe that is some exaggeration.

I have been practicing my German language skills, but my spoken German still is primitive and stale from lack of use. I can read German, but speaking and hearing it is a different story.

Stay Well and Shoot Straight,
Ron

"I can read German, but speaking and hearing it is a different story."

That's me. I can read German and Spanish and speak it a bit. However, hearing what they're saying is another story.

Have a good time over there. BTW, why go now? It's not Oktober. drunken

I managed to get an invitation to give a research presentation in Germany and it permitted me to piggy back the vacation trip on the professional activities. The timing is just the way it happened to work out.

It has been quite a trip.
First, there is no way I can keep my girlish figure, what with the food that is served.
We have visited the picturesque German towns along the Rhine River. The external timbers and medieval towers and castles are the real images of the Grimm Brothers fairy tales.

There are some tours that my knee is not quite up to, so I have missed some medieval and Renaissance palace visits. However, there are alternative excursions I can do, including a visit to an 1836 Fortress built to repel the English and French. The fine engineering of the fort is evident.
We went through some vineyards where grapes for Riesling wines are grown. I am not much  of an alcoholic beverage connoisseur, but as they say in Colorado: "That's some good sh....stuff, man."

Have you ever seen a 700 year old roadway? Here is one in Miltenburg, Germany. The only roadway that is as rough and irregular that I can recall is I70 going through Denver. Very Happy

Here is dinner for an evening:

Very pleasant group on the trip. Everyone  that is part of the trip is as old as Methuselah, or at least as old as me!
The food is fabulous! None of it fits my low salt, low fat, low taste cardboard diet.

Loving the pics, Ron. Try not to cause any international incidents.
Any chance you can find a nice Prussian BP rifle to bring home?

Al, it is a little too stiff for being Pete...I think. Shocked

We visited the trial room of the Nuremberg trials. This is the room where Goering and the other Nazi officials sat while judges from the Allied nations listened to testimony. I must admit to twinges of emotion while in that historic room.

I have, of course, seen photos and films of the room, but never thought I would be sitting there in the press area of Nuremberg Room 600. Quite the experience.
I look forward to more pleasant experiences as we move on the Munich and Vienna.

Colonel, I knew that, sooner or later, hanging around the Frontier Muzzleloading site would come to no good. Laughing

We were in Vienna for 2 days and now are in Budapest. I am exhausted and look forward to getting home (we leave for home tomorrow morning.)
I think I have ABC syndrome: Another Bloody Cathedral.
I do like the quaint, historic buildings and small, cobblestone streets. I prefer the quiet country villages to the major cities.
Each color indicates a particular business. Blue is a bakery.

People think I am a bit eccentric when I discuss my muzzleloader interest. Then again, they thought that long before my muzzle loaders. A New York woman mildly chastised me for my interest in firearms. I suggested that her irrational fear should not be transferred to the choices and lifestyle opportunities to those who don't have the same fear of guns. However, she shares my father-in-law's approach to a discussion: "Don't confuse the issue with facts."

Thanks, Marty!
We arrived home about 2 hours ago after a 10 hour flight from Frankfurt.
It was an outstanding experience. We were saving and planning for a trip like this, but spoke about in a future tense. After some health issues last year, we decided to take the trip while we still are capable of getting around.
My wife's father's family is from Austria and her mother's is from Hungary, so visiting those countries was significant for her.
Ron

Note: Flying Lufthansa was a pleasure. Flying United Airlines to Europe ...well...I now have seen Castle torture rooms that seemed more comfortable. At least you get to stretch out on the "rack."

I haven't flown in about 8-10 years. It was just when they started the one free bag rule. I really dread fighting those SOB's the next time I have to fly.
I usually fly with a gun case so I imagine it will be worse than a medieval cell complete with Inquisition guards.

Lufthansa is a much better airline than what we have to put up with in the states.

Bob, air travel can be ugly now. Some airlines quote you a price- then charge you for any bag not pre-declared (even carry on), AND CHARGE YOU FOR PICKING A SEAT. They make you do that. They won't assign them. (Allegiant) Stick with Southwest if you can. Delta if you can't. Avoid any flight that is not non-stop. I have not flown a single flight in the last five years that was not delayed at the first leg. Chicago may as well be the Bermuda Triangle.

There is an Alaskan airline that is supposed to be good. I have not flown it.

Here's a thought? Ship your muzzleloader ahead via USPS and avoid the hassle with the airports.
I do that for my Kentucky hunts and it works out great. (Don't ship Holy Black) It means I assemble two separate hunting bags, but hey. I kinda like that. It is a touch more expensive, but I hate travel hassles.

Welcome home, Ron! Glad to see you stayed out of trouble with the local constabularies. rabbit
