PostSubject: Going To Be A Long Winter   Going To Be A Long Winter Empty2017-09-01, 20:54

Was doing real well. I know I have dealt with Degenerative Bone Disease in my Lower and Upper Spine, one Stenosis.

Went swam at the YMCA came home went to water my Garden, messed my Back up so much I almost didn't make it to the House. This was a month ago.

Went got MRI. Doctor sent me to a Specialist. Specialist said I now have Arthritis on my Spine and because I'm on Blood Thinners there is nothing they can do. So I'm taking more Pain Killers. Legally I can't Drive or Hunt.

I don't like hearing that. It's going to be a long winter especially for an outdoorsman like you. I hope you get some relief soon. Nothing worse than back issues.

Take care

Sorry to hear it, Oneshot. Getting old isn't nearly as bad as getting infirm. I hope you recover enough to get around without pain.

I had to go to the doctor yesterday to get my back treated. She put me on a pack of prednisone. Said I'd have to get some shots in my spine next week if the prednisone doesn't help.
I told her it had to be fixed by Sept. 16th which is the start of hunting season. She said she'd try.  Neutral

Ah man....

Seems to be something in the air. Have two friends who had their backs fused in the last year and another who is in the final stages of fighting to keep it from happening.  I have a looong back (I'm 6'4") and "fortunately" tossed my back out of whack while in my 30's, close to 40 years ago. Most miserable experience of my life, but fortunately was able to recover.  Made me a nazi about back health and care, and knock on wood, it's worked so far. But that 2-week experience with a bad back makes me really feel for anyone else suffering with few options for recovery.

Hats off to anyone and everyone going through it and tough enough to endure.  Dunno if I could do it.

I got shots in my knees last week and am in the middle of a prednisone pack now for my feet. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Oneshot,

I am 99% sure I know how you feel and I will bet a few other "young bucks" on here do too. It is hard to enjoy our golden years when so many of life's monkey wrenches are thrown are way. I wish you the best.

Ok my wife came up with something. This week going to have test on my Bad Leg, if it isn't giving me circulation and in turn giving me pain they will have no option but to amputate it. If they do I should be off Blood Thinners and Pain Free for awhile.

My wife is very insistent that I don't drive or hunt because if something was to happen no matter if it is or isn't my fault if something goes wrong the Law will make a very big deal out of it and say it is my fault. And I know she is right.

I know that every case is different, but I will share that my brother-in-law back in North Carolina had his toes, then foot, then lower leg amputated. With his prosthesis, he gets around well, taking walks and playing golf. He finally is pain free!

Most amputations seem to be to diabetes. My mother had several toes removed because of it.
She got along fine for years with toes missing .. even played golf too.

Don't have diabetes but my Leg looks like I do.

I have very Bad Circulation. Had Blood Clots. They put me on Blood Thinners, then took me off for awhile and I got Blood Clots once again. they said I will be on Blood Thinners from here on out.

Oh I also got MERSA from a Tick that I had to be operated on a few years ago.

I had my Gall Bladder taken out and they spent 17 hours keeping me alive. So they are scared to Operate.

Ok dang it. I drove my Pickup to the Gym and did well Friday, did Yoga, Yoga instructor showed me some stretching that should help.

Saturday evening I thought I would go to the river Trout fishing from the bank. Caught one short of my Limit, was really trying to catch that last one but my Legs gave out on me and I almost didn't make it back to the Pickup.

Monday thought ok go to the Gym work out in the Pool for an Hour. Did good. Knowing its suppose to cool down Wednesday. Feel so so, check my Crossbow out, it is shooting fine. Started loading some stuff. Once again my Legs give out.

Was drawn for a Muzzleloader Hunt October 21, Southern Missouri in Ozark Mountains. Couple years ago I was thinking the Hunt was just too hard and I was no longer going to put in for it. This year wasn't sure I wanted to go there or our Cabin by a Major Lake and flatter ground with many Grain Fields. I thought what the heck, I like being in the Hills give it another chance. My Son said he would never hunt the Hills again, it is just too hard.

Here it is almost first of October. Before I got down had plans to have couple Deer by now.

My wife says just give up on Hunting and go Fishing where I can drive up to the water.

Ok my main problem for the most part is a pinched Nerve. After a bit I get down and can't walk. I have Pinched Nerve in one Leg and Poor Circulation in the other with Chronic Blood Clots.

My wife says I have improved, I can get around with out my Cane. She says I keep working out in the Pool maybe I can Deer hunt in November but I figure it goes that long I might as well not go.

My Doctors have told me for 20+ years this will happen. I'm thinking in my 60's time to take it easy and buy Hamburger. I could get Road Kill Deer but I hate to get a call on one only to find It isn't no good.

All my life I have enjoyed Hunting and Fishing for most our Meat. I have enjoyed setting for hours waiting.

I feel like I'm less.

PostSubject: Re: Going To Be A Long Winter   Going To Be A Long Winter Empty2017-09-27, 06:33

I felt that way for a time after a twice torn quadriceps and then a heart operation. It troubled me that my physical capabilities were diminished and recovery was so slow. I am done moping and feeling bad about my state of affairs. My plan is to enjoy the years I have left.
I have changed my approach and am determined to get back whatever capabilities that I can and move ahead. I can't do century (100 mile rides) on my bicycle anymore, but just ride around the neighborhood. There won't be any 14'ers (climbing Colorado mountains above 14,000 ft) for me in the future, but I'll get out on the trail and do what I can do.
I can guarantee that there aren't any cross-country motorcycle rides that I will do, but I may jump into my car and start traveling. I won't miss riding in a downpour in Oregon or finding myself in snow in June on Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado. I will miss the wind through my hair, though. Wait....I don't have any hair!
I hope you have the opportunity to enjoy life up to your limits.
Ron

Poor circulation is a real problem, had the vessels stripped to correct blood flow in one leg. Your blood goes down the leg then comes back to the heart, mind would pool in the main vein then go to the heart. My feet are freezing all the time, have lost 35-38 percent of my blood flow. This was why we tried the stripped method, got rid of the enlarge vessels and one foot seems a little warmer. Going to get tested again to see if blood flow is difference since my one leg was worked on. Mind is caused by being diabetic which I didn't know I was until this all started a few years ago.

Good luck "you have to be tough to handle getting old" I was told years ago. Holy Crap that was understated once your there. pale  affraid

I don't have vessels to strip so they say and I had Clots often. One Doctor said I was a walking time bomb with this. Didn't want me Hunting at all.

Been told by several Specialist there is nothing can be done. I was surprised this last time. I really looked for them to operate but they said there was too much chance I would die and they won't take the chance.

My MIL is one of the many with multiple problems, kidney disease, heart disease, urinary tract cancer, plus several others. She is at dialysis today but has told my wife (her daughter) to withhold any further treatment.
She is starting into dementia and her kids expect her to pass on any day now.

Getting old isn't for sissies.

Stick with it as long as possible, One Shot.

Being a Marine never was one to back off from anything.

Did the 14'ers back 35 years ago. Lived in Salida. Never went Wolf Creek but did Cotton Pass all the time. My wife won't let me have motorcycle anymore says I ride too fast. She would ride Harley up to Monarch Ski area when she worked there in the snow. I have taken small rocks off Mountains because I figured I would never be up there again. I also have small rocks from hundreds of feet in Mines.

I was wanting to camp with my Sidelock, Flint and Steel and Knife in the Winter. affraid My wife is like ARE YOU CRAZY!!!!!

Now most I can walk is couple hundred yards now with out having to have help

They spent 16 hours keeping me alive 4 years ago and I about died again two days later just over a Gallbladder operation. To me it was a perfect time to die all calm and no pain.

No right now I'm a mess. Been Working Out 3X a week in the Pool and do Yoga but I'm sore afterwards, I've been hoping it will help.

I had a clot hit me when the vessels were stripped, sitting at the small vessel by the main vessel that goes to the heart. I was put on blood thinner and watched every other day for two weeks.

With the diabetes and lack of blood flow in legs and feet winter camping came to an end at 75 years of age. Can't feel my feet, there's a chance of freezing my toes in below zero weather per my doctors. So much for winter primitive camping with a couple of blankets, a mattress of pine limbs buried under the leaves with leaves on top of you. Believe it or not we have done winter camps like this about every other month at 10,000 feet. Now I'm restricted to spring through fall camps with the temps being from 50 to 35 degrees - I'm safe I tell the wife. One camp we had a small black bear come in around 3AM and lick the cooking pot clean sitting beside the cooking fire pit, a little tense for a few minutes. We'll remember that experience along with a skunk doing the same in MO on a canoe outing. Fun memories...

She is hauling Firewood for Winter after next. Almost has the Shed full. I went and did Yoga again today. hurting, my wife says I over did it, more just pulling things.

We are on Road Kill List. She is concerned about me getting a Deer into the back of the Pickup. Thinking I can tie a rope to it and pull it up. Getting into the Bed of the Pickup is the hardest part.

I know exactly what you are saying oneshot when it comes to  trying to lift a deer into a vehicle...especially if you are by yourself.   I struggled last year to lift my deer onto my Jeep's extension tray.  If anyone has a slick-trick to lifting a deer 2 feet above the ground by yourself I'm all ears.Going To Be A Long Winter ALL_ears_-_Copy_zpsouuhpp8g

Good to see you doing yoga to whatever extent you can.  :rtup I've been doing yoga once-a-week ever since I injured by back 17 years ago.   It's clearly been a positive thing for me over the years.

Well getting worse. I'm still working out in the swimming Pool and Yoga but I was in the Pool yesterday, I hollered the Instructor didn't realize I really hurt myself.

I'm thinking I now have Arthritis in my right shoulder. Not going to completely quit for now but still a no go as far as hunting. Thinking I might go fishing today by the house where I'm close to the river and can set in a chair.

Hmmm that is a real hard part to try to cover!

One year my brother in law had to use a small atv tow strap, put it around the head of the deer and took the other end onto the tool box and ratchet the head onto the tail gate and then lift the body into the truck bed. It was still a bitch, but sometimes just getting the head up helps a lot.

The only other thing to do in a small winch.

If you get a post with a winch that goes into your hitch receiver, you can winch the deer into the back of your Jeep but you can't have both the winch and the extension tray.

Jeeps are a poor choice for a hunting vehicle IMO. A small Toyota Tacoma with 4WD is a much better choice or any truck for that matter.

Well if I was feeling better I would have been Camping and hunting Deer with my Muzzleloader this weekend on a special Hunt. First time I've been drawn for this Hunt and didn't go in last 30 years.

Yesterday was Good but last night it was storming and today it has been raining all morning so maybe for the best.
