Jon don't have fire ants in Colorado.

The things are all over the place here.   Early last week i was greasing the u-joints on my truck.   Was wearing flip flops, of course.   Was lying on my side when my left foot got off the driveway.   Something started stinging like hades.   My foot and ankle were covered with fire ants.   Got over 30 bites.   Went on a crusade destroying fire ant mounds on the lawn.

These fire ant bites fester.   The bites are still red and swollen.

Fire ants here kill a lot young quail and young turkeys.   Fire ants can't take cold weather.   Several  years ago a heavy warm rain came and  the ants  moved  to the surface.   Then the big freeze came and finished them off.   We had very few fire ants for years afterward.

If the gov't. hadn't stopped us from applying Mirex 40 years back we'd have no problem now!! The B-17s were doing a great job!

We have plenty of fire ants. They usually crawl up your pants leg until some get to your privates, then one of them seems to give the "attack" signal and they all bite at once. You have to dance around swatting while you shed your pants and whatever to smash them.

Actually, I have been in places with many more biting insects than Florida. The North Woods of Wisc., Michigan, Minnesota, and Canada have blackflies, ticks and mosquitoes a lot worse than we do.

I spent 14 days in May-June fishing in Northern Wisconsin. It was miserable with the blackflies biting every spot of exposed skin. You had to wear a headnet, long sleeves and gloves and it was warm out. The fishing was good but not worth the misery.
