PostSubject: Record MPG in the 460!   September 7th 2017, 6:00 pm

We got the camper set up at the hunting area today. On the way back, we filled up and I checked the MPG.

6.69 MPG!

I don't know WTF happened today. It normally gets around 9mpg pulling the camper loaded with all the gear and water. It was windier than normal, so maybe that had something to do with it. I also kept it around 60-65 VS 70-75 so maybe the slower pace was causing her to work up a sweat.

A 460 with a 3 speed OD auto sure in shit isn't geared for pulling very fast on the hills.

diesel diesel diesel. It's on my Christmas list if any of you fellers are thinking of me by that time lol!

It seems I recall a Bonneville Salt Flats car getting 3 gallons per mile. Be glad you don't have to buy fuel for it.

Our last drag car ('70 Challenger MN Dodge dealer's factory race car) got 4 miles to the gallon. An AA/A Altered Alcohol fueled vintage Bantam drag car - supercharged Hemi I had 15 years ago got 1/8 mile to the gallon on $12 a gallon race fuel. Toys aren't cheap, you just go with the flow ....  pale

When I was in the 3rd Armored Div in Germany from 68-71 our M88 Tank Retrievers only managed 7-9 gallons per mile depending what we were pulling .

The headwind is a killer. My usual drive from a fill-up in Moab UT is the west side of Boise where I have about 1/8 of a tank left.  One trip I had a headwind all the way, but wasn't paying any attention.  Got about 50 miles east of Mountain Home and the low fuel alarm started going off. Barely made it into Mountain Home on fumes, and the fill-up took more than I even knew the truck would hold.  Lesson learned!

I had a '64 T-Bird that I bought used many years ago. My best mpg while newly tuned up was 9 mpg. Even at 25 cents a gallon, we had to decide whether to fill up the car or go out on a date.

Our Subaru Forester has been getting about 27 mpg around town. It is a great little car, but I had to peel the PITA and Rainbow Power stickers off of it. (Uh, oh. Did I just get political?)

That's a nice truck and a nice camping area.

The Ford 460 engine with an automatic transmission is a real gas guzzler.

i always asked for Ford rental trucks on job sites.   The F250  trucks with five speed overdrive transmissions  got 12-14 mpg.   The 5.4 engine in the newer F250 trucks was a gas guzzler.  It  sucked up nearly as  much gas as the 460.

I just sold my race car puller, a 2002 Ford F250 7.5-liter, 460-cubic-inch V8 auto 4X4. When I first purchased the truck it had 8K miles, talked to the service manager at local Ford dealership about getting better gas mileage. They reprogramed the computer for my needs in Colorado, set the tire size, etc. When done we went from 8 mpg to 11-12 mpg and that's pulling an enclosed 24' trailer with race gear and car. The trailer and car weighted 5130 lb. guys that we raced with didn't believe me so several took our rig for a drive and couldn't believe the pulling power as well as the mileage. Within a month the ones with similar rigs had been to Ford and were now enjoying their setups much more.. :tup2

I've got an F-250 4x4 with the 5.4. It gets 12 mpg on the hiway. Only 10 if I'm hunting.

You know any tech's that are good on a computer, they can adjust for a number of items like your driving location (that really helped us with being a mile high and truck was set for sea level). Plus larger tires, exhaust system, larger value body, my tech corrected everything with just being plugged into his computer.

Our 2011 4x4 RAM 2500 w/ 5.7 Hemi drops down to around 12mpg when towing our 22' travel trailer and holds at around 17.5mpg on the highway. If the "highway" has 55 speed posted and I stay below 60mph it pushes up to around 19mpg. Could have nudged that to over 20mpg with a 1500 and no 4x4, but it's a TRUCK and was chosen to meet our needs, not some mileage goal.

Our new 2016 Ford F150 is getting 17 MPH in town and 23 MPH on the road. Standard V8 and seems to have plenty of power as I have a heavy foot and with the 6 speed tranny I drive it nuts.

You know ,as a flat lander from Wisconsin  and a mechcanic I was surprised that going up the mountain for the first time , all I could smell was clutches , going down the other side was the smell of hot brakes. Also if some cowboy went fling by you in the mountains he had a diesel and was rolling smoke.
