Range Report On my new GPR Empty
PostSubject: Range Report On my new GPR   Range Report On my new GPR EmptyNovember 21st 2017, 10:43 pm

So this morning I took the new GPR for its first firing.
Started at 25 yds. to get on paper.
Windage was dead on, but had to elevation all the way out until only one thread held it together.
Fired two rounds to get it to POA.
Then fired this three round group  Cool

Then moved to 50yds. and fired these two

Then things fell apart.
Shots went all over, so I switched my load components.
Even worse.
I stop and go done range to retrieve my patches.
Most are completely blown through  affraid
My lube is not holding up.
First rounds with Tallow looked good, but last few were bad.
Then nearly all the Mink oil ones were blown clean threw or completely in pieces.
Recommend me some lube ideas please.

My shoot out lube. Lyman has super sharp rifling that needs to be smooth out. Run 40 to 50 shots with my shoot out and it will be perfect.

Are you going to use the gun for hunting or just target shooting. The reason I'm asking is your load of 60 grains is what most shoot in a .50 for target, for hunting you need to stoke it up 20 grains to see where it prints at for 25, 50 and 100 yards. You may gain a little on the adjustment screw with the adjustment. If it were me and you have to stay where you are on the rear site I would worry about the screw moving or loosing it.

No, not enough to smooth out the rifling in the sample.

Hunting and Target.
Working on a accurate target load first, then a heavier hunting load.
I like the sights, so I will start filing down the front sight to bring up the POI.
Also I am looking for a T/C Hawken rear tang sight for it but they are no longer made
and hard to find, but they fit the GPR perfect.

Try here for one the height and hole placement, Williams tang sights have been around forever, great quality and a fair price.

Round Two:
Lapped the barrel last night.
Filed the sight down at the range to bring up POI on target.
70gr. 777 FFF
.490 Speer balls
.018 Drill Material lubed with 100% Olive oil cooking spay.
Normal grouping was this then a lightly torn patch would toss a flyer about 3" away.

Next I decided to load a dry patch first over the powder, then load patched ball.
Dry patch was toast, blown through, but lubed patch would be reusable.
This is the results:

Highlander, as for finding the Thompson sight you mentioned ,look at ebay,"antique black powder hunting." They don't run cheap ,but they have quite a few. Some sets, some single.A lot of Thompson stuff.
