I had just dropped a copy of my Curio and Relict License renewal application at the County Sheriff's office when a movement caught my eye. Right there, just beyond the parking lot was a male elk and his herd of females. They were grazing right at the intersection of two, large streets (Rt. 6 and Jefferson Parkway). In fact, Rt. 6 is 4 lanes there with plenty of traffic and quite a risk to animals crossing.

You can see the lucky male on the far left.
How come I never see this sort of gathering during hunting season?
Ron

Ron, I assume the "Herd" in the title is on purpose for a marginally successful pun. But mistaking elk for mule deer is unforgivable.  nono

Time to 'see' the ophthalmologist.

Yes, Elk. An internet gremlin typed in "mule deer" when I wasn't looking.  Very Happy have corrected the identity of the critters.
I humbly ask forgiveness.
Thanks, Vincem.

I thought you guys were hunters. Oh, that's right these southern guys have never seen cow elk before. This looks like a herd of elk that use to work my hay stacks over every fall. You could fence the hay put up an electric fence or even a stockade fence and they would still get into the plie. Hay anymore is at a preimum and these guys can distroy thousands of dollars worth in a couple evenings. What they can't eat they piss on, then nothing will eat it. Now to get rid of it your selling it for 20% of its original value. Crop damage claims only work a few times then the DOW won't honor anymore claims for that property.

About once a month during fall and winter I would shoot a half dozen of them off my hay stacks and then supply all the neighbors a quarter to help with meat costs (most old farmers that could use the help). Then one day a friend (local Game Warden) stopped at the house and tells to watch my step as he was retiring and the new warden may not look the other way like he had been doing for years. I thought I was good at being sneekey and he knew all along ....  Shocked
