SUBJECT: MEDICINE BAGS & MEDICINE BUNDLES

When reproducing these items care should be used as your dealing with very special materials, read on.

This small medicine bag was presented to me when called for duty in 1961, I have worn this bag since then (never opened) and respected as is.
This is a reproduction of a "Medicine Bundle - Hanger" (1900 era) special items attached to a large medicine bag that would be rolled inside a cover with the medicine bundle for protection and guarded by those appointed by their tribe.
If you start counting the number of beads, teeth, bones, claws and misc other items it would cost a pretty penny to put together today. I have always liked the small medicine bag attached at the top with the red, green, and white cross on its bottom. My father was working with Indian Affairs in DC around 1920 and was given this "hanger" by tribal members, we have had it ever since.

Today you see folks reproducing so called medicine bags, medicine bundles that are not named correctly, see picture below. These are anything from pipe bags to personal beaded bags used in the Pow Wow events.

Same goes for the "bandolier" shoulder bags, not a medicine bag or medicine bundle.

I get a chance later this week I have to show you a couple pictures of original (before 1900) medicine bags purchased with collections. If known they were included in the collections - the collections wouldn't have been bought. In the 1940's my father gave them to the Cody Museum and out of our collections, (just not sure if spirits were attached or not, better safe than sorry was his feeling).

Here you go, found the pictures ...

Quite common designs found in these bags, may vary in color of beads.

my two children who are now 18 and 21 have medicine bags since birth. inside each of their bags is a piece of their mothers hair, a piece of their own hair, their dried up belly button when it fell of them. also a piece of paper that says jesus is lord. my native friends at that time said put something religous in it so i did. jesus is lord.
