PostSubject: A CANNON & KEEL BOAT GUN MATCH   Wed 11 Apr - 12:24

Here was a fun time for shooters, club members from both sides and the large group of locals that watched at a distance.

This was a "North-South against the Mountain Men" Shoot, anything they had that was period correct could be used. After a dozen matches of side arms and long guns with the Mountain Men winning all but two events it was TIME.

Time of the big guns, that's what everyone was waiting for
A CANNON & KEEL BOAT GUN MATCH.

The Civil War guys had a 4 pound cannon (not sure if it was original or not) they had just been in a Major Cannon Championship match against several dozen other groups taking a 3rd in several matches. Needless to say they had that "we're in tall cotton" attitude. They never shut up about their success.

All we had was a 1 inch original keel boat gun with no fancy step ladder sight like the other group. "Keel Boat" owner of this guns said "that's just extra stuff to get damaged". "Keel Boat" used the length of the fuse (top) and the center rim on the muzzle for sighting.

The distance was approximately 200 plus yards shooting up hill on the side of a mountain. I figured it would be safe with at least twice that distance to the top. Boyu was that a mistake as there was a trailer park on the next ridge over about 1/4 mile away. Now you have what was going to get real exciting.

To make a long story short the Mountain Men kicked butt with 3 hits out of a "Five Shot Match" with the Civil War boys having only 1 hit. They had the $400 dollar ladder sighting device that failed against our little old fuse. The scary part was the mentioned hill and the trailer park this got really interesting when the cannon balls walked up the hill and land half the distance to the park on the other side.

The Civil War group brought their tentage and setup for the weekend as did our group (the party lasted almost to dawn all three nights). They the Civil War group had setup whiskey tent with whiskey mixed with blackpowder like days of old. (last picture on right) With the mountain man heading that way (he can smell booze at a 100 yards). Fun event we did five times in a row each year, lots of press coverage, mountain men won all five events.

They'd probably say they're just following Ordnance Corps orders or protocol.
