PostSubject: First time to load Blackhorn 209   April 21st 2018, 5:30 pm

Quick question: after finally getting my scope mounted earlier this week, I'm about ready to go sight it in (bore-sighted to 25 yards).  I just weighed out a 70 grain load of Blackhorn 209 (shows a bit less that 100 grs. on their volume tube).  I never have dropped my pellets, mainly triple 7 over the last 14 years, but pyrodex as well, with a primer in, ready to shoot.  I always drop the pellets with *no* primer in, and don't put a primer in until after the bullet is seated.  Will loose powder fall through the hole?  I know it couldn't be much, but I'm a complete novice at this, and didn't want to do it until I knew the proper procedure.  Just to refresh you...I'm shooting a Winchester Apex, which is a swing action.

If you look closely, you will see that BlackHorn 209 is made up of little cylinders. This makes it much bulkier than black powder or Pyrodex. Depending on the size of your flash channel it should not be able to slip into it unless a grain just happens to go into the hole EXACTLY in line with it. Even then it probably wouldn't matter.

Load without the primer in place.

Ditto.  BH209 won't be a problem loading that way.

Thanks to both of you for your responses.  When I got to thinking about how small the hole is on the powder end, I figured that it shouldn't be a problem.  I'll post results after sighting this scope in, and my first shots with BH209.

Just looking at the Blackhorn 209 load data and your findings are spot on. Keep in mind, any loose powder will weigh about 20-30% less than by volume, so it is always important to double check these things. You'll notice that the top of their load chart shows 70 grains by weight being the equivalent of 100 grains by volume. Good luck!

When figuring out volume/weight for Blackhorn, simply multiply by .7

Say for example you want to try 95 grains of powder... How much is  that by weight exactly?

Simple, if'n your math is good, or not, use a calculator, simply punch in 95x.7

This equals 66.5 grains weight.
