Looks like Paul and myself are the only two using smoothbores for the Postal Matches at this time.  :rtup

I've been known to shoot my smoothbore now and then. Mostly with prb's, but occasionally with shot. It originally had a 34 inch barrel, but I shortened it up and added sights. I've taken deer and hogs with it. It is a .62 caliber..

Mofish I like your gun. I really don't like the long barreled guns. I have a gun I am thinking of chopping the barrel on just to make it a little more handy to use. Its 55" long now. Too dern long for my taste.

Just one of my toys I guess. I sorta turned it into a canoe gun to play with, but do take it out hunting once in a while. I have others with long rifled barrels to hunt with, but it's fun to make a challenge out of the hunting sometimes. I've tried shooting clays with it a time or two, but never did well with it...with either barrel length. Just never got the timing with the flintlock down right for flying things I guess.

I'll be spending some time in Florida this winter and plan to bring my French Fusil Smoothbore and hunt some hogs. .62 cal PRB so it should be enough fire power.

I have shot a lot of hogs around here, and one thing I have learned is...shoot them through the front shoulder when possible. That .62 of yours will work just fine, but a lung shot can result in a loss of the animal. A hog can run for 100's of yards with a hole through it's lungs, but once you upset the central nervous system by shooting forward of the lungs, they stop quick. By breaking the front shoulder on one it helps a lot too.
I've seen a lot of wounded hogs run into the thick brush and disappear.

The Dallas Muzzleloader club is having their annual "Smoothbore Frolic" rendezvous this weekend. I've gotten too old to camp out at rendezvous anymore, as the old back and some stuff just won't tolerate it, but it sure was fun in the old days. They are allowing percussion smoothbores this year as well as flnters.

My smoothie is a Sitting Fox kit. .54 cal/28 gauge. Throws a pattern of #6 shot that's a killer. PRB is great too. I added a rear sight for the ball, and to keep my cheek on the stock shooting upland game.

I have had probably owned at least 5-6 Northwest, Hudson's Bay, or farm guns over the years, some originals while others were reproductions that were good and some average. Have sold them through our different ventures from fairly inexpensive to high dollar custom ones.

No matter who built the reproduction tradegun - with a little knowledge of originals they could be picked apart in one or more places. That's fine, in some cases the difference was done to protect us (improved for safety) or made to make handling easier.

I was a good friend with "The Museum of the Fur Trade" owner Charles E. Hanson, Jr., now if you want to know about these guns here's where to go. Nice folks and more guns than one day can take in. Visiting with Hanson and Curley G. was really an educational experience, to sit and talk to both was like having talking history books in front of you.

If we weren't using tradeguns it would be 1874 Sharps rifles - originals or reproductions. In the early 80's we stopped using the original guns both NW Trade Guns and the Sharps (they had become to valuable then). Both types are a lot of fun to shoot, cartridge Sharps can be expensive today to shoot as much as we shot them.

The Northwest Trade Gun is one of the best smoothbores to own, because of it's weight it can be carried all day with little effort. I have taken anything from small gray squirrels to 2000 lb. buffalo without any issues with a .50 cal. to .72 cal. guns. Theses pictures state a dozen animals taken by me, but I have shot another 5-6 for clients and friends that couldn't keep them on the ground (poor ball placement).

One picture shows me close to the bull placing a finishing shot behind the ear to keep him down for a friend. That's why I always have had two NW Guns guns available if needed.

I had GRRW.CA custom gunsmith Doc White build a copy of an original .50 cal. (smoothbore) H.E. Leman NW Gun seen at a museum in Denver back in the 60's. The only small bore of this caliber we had ever seen (Doc figured it was built special order for a small person). This gun has turned out to be a sweetie coming in at 6 lbs. (a little heavier than the original by a pound because of barrel thickness and knowing it will be shooting round ball as much as shot).  Fun project and lucky there had been measurements as well as lots of pictures taken when found at the museum.

My gun is a .62 X 38" flintlock with a Chambers Colonial Va lock and front & rear sights.  I shoot mostly prb and it's a true "deer dropper".  If the weather permits I'[ll join in any postal shoot including smoothbore.
This deer was a running shot.

Hanshi I do like that gun and the result !
I shot a smoothbore percussion musket as a young teenager, I just lucked apon a ball mould and tried greased denim patches. This gun had both front and rear sight, I was able to shoot rabbits out to 40 odd yards with it. I remember being quite surprised on how accurat it was.

Heelerau, I wanted a rear sight when I ordered the smoothbore so there'd be no adjusting between the gun and my rifle.  It paid off, too.  Even shot loads are only an inch or two lower than the ball poi.  I can aim at a turkey's head and still get the head and lot's of neck hits.
