PostSubject: P. Powell & Son 16ga Double Barrel   P. Powell & Son 16ga Double Barrel EmptyJanuary 7th 2019, 8:20 pm

Got this in a few days ago and took her all apart for cleaning/inspecting. She is in solid shooting condition! Made in London, fine twist damascus barrels, the trigger pulls are surprisingly light for a shotgun! The previous owner was nice enough to fit new nipple onto the breeches, so that was a big welcome. Barrels appear to be in the 30 to 32" range. I have not measured them yet, but wow! The balance on the shotgun is really nice.

The stock thank god, isn't dried out either. I already rubbed in two thin coats of linseed oil for some protection.

I don't know if I will keep it yet, but man, shes purdy up on my wall!

Remember the old firms started in Europe, a large number in London. The gunmaker's family name Powell has been around a long time.

P. Powell & Son's
Here's one ad for a shotgun by P. Powell & Son. "London Fine Twist" marked on top of barrels. Double barrel percussion shotgun. Not a working piece at this time. The stock is cracked in several places. It has rust. The trigger guard is broken where it screws on the stock and it has several old nails holding it all together. Now for the good news. As best we could learn from the London Proof Library they were in business between 1850 and 1870.

P. Powell & Son's
Another ad - British proof's on the bottom of the barrels and also inspectors marks and London England stamped on the bottom of the barrels. Interesting it not 10 ga. it's a 11 ga. and marked 11 ga. on the bottom of both barrel's. I am guessing the P. Powell & Son's is one of the gun dealers here in the U.S that was buying the guns from family in England.

They were inexpensive working guns, not high grade by any means, just a good solid shotgun.

She shoots! I proofed both barrels today with 100gr 2fg GO black powder & 1 1/8oz 7 1/2 bird shot. I was able to position the barrel and keep the nipples in place, so she got the full pressure build up.

I'll take some better pictures this evening, but since I got it, I have been rubbing in a coat of linseed oil every other week.

The fun factor alone would make it worth keeping and shooting IMO.

That is one  Cool double you got there FG.  I really like the aged wood.  Lookin' good.  Any particular reason why you chose linseed oil on this one to finish  Question

Marty, I didn't want to use a modern finish on it. Just something traditional that would soak in and not harm the original finish on it. Just keep it looking original but add some protection to the wood.
