.54 Patched Round Ball Barrel Empty
PostSubject: .54 Patched Round Ball Barrel    .54 Patched Round Ball Barrel Empty2019-03-14, 10:25

Will have a .50 caliber New Englander barrel bored out to .54 caliber. Am thinking of a 56" twist with round bottom grooves. The rifle would be used exclusively with patched round balls.

Any advice?

Short barrel. I'd use real BP in 3F. You'll have to work up the load to see what's accurate.

What are you hunting?

Cool project falcon.  Did you buy your New Englander new, and what inspired you to go with a .54 Question

I just reread your post. You're asking about the twist. I thought you already had the .54. I thought to myself when I read the 1-56 that it was too fast. I'd go slower if it was me.

My .50 New Englander was bought for $150 in about 2013. It had never been fired and came with a Tupperware stock. Bought a nice walnut stock cheap on ebay. That rifle has killed 1-3 deer every year since. Have no complaints about the rifle.

Also have a .54 New Englander that has accounted for a few deer and a bunch of hogs.

i just want a purpose built round ball .54 caliber.

I have many .54 caliber rifles. The most accurate of the bunch are the two with 1:70 ROT. Using a .530 and a .018 dry lube patch over 80 grains I get one-hole at 50-yards off bench and can do 2.5" at 100-yds.  The 1:66 that I have is nearly as accurate at 50-yds but shows that something isn't perfect at 100-yards with 3.5" best groups and it needs 100 grains to do that.

In my opinion, I don't think you would be disappointed with the 1:56 twist.  On the Thompson Center  "Round Ball Barrels" they made them 1:66 twist. I've had a few barrels bored out to 1:60 twist, they shot well.  The Isaac Haines .54 cal rifle that I'm working on has a barrel made by Rice and is a 1:66 twist.  If you're making a dedicated round ball rifle a slower twist would be more traditional.
