Very nice! Someone with a sharp set of chisels and even sharper ability did some very precise inletting. Where did you find that slab of Maple?!? That has the most amount of curl/ quilting/ figure I've ever seen.

Get a serial number Jonathan and I'll get you the name of the GRRW gunsmith that built the gun, who purchased the gun and when it was built. Carl Walker, Ron Paull and a few others had the best inletting skills from the GRRW guns I have looked at. Phil Meek has looked as many of these guns as anybody and could share what he has seen too.

GRRW Collectors Association will get $1,000 - $1,200 in labor, parts will run $1,000 and more depending on the grade of the wood (the more striping the higher the price).  Figure around $2,200 plus shipping for one as nice as this one.

Several of the guys here can tell you what they paid.

All I do is put you on the GRRW.CA client waiting list, when a custom gunsmith has finished his last project the two of you will be put together and I'm out of the process.

You purchase the parts needed through the suggested supplier - you'll have a shopping list from your smith. You pay for the parts, taxes and shipping to your gunsmith. You will keep in touch with the gunsmith through the build and when he's done, you'll pay him for his labor and shipping to you.

This was as simple as I could make it for everyone, no added costs, just straight forward and clean as possible.  What's funny is several modern and muzzleloading firms told me this idea wouldn't work. After (50) GRRW.CA guns produced using this idea in less than two years several are now trying it out, customers like knowing what's going on and being involved.

Lewis are you ready to have your name put on the waiting list for one like this, costs nothing and if you change your mind, no problem.

Isn't that the truth, we lost one of the owners and builders - Greg Roberts and a machinist and builder - Lloyd Helms this year 2019. Most are in their late 70's and early 80's, still have the skills to build very nice rifles and accessories.

Go to Doc's site to see GRRW Collector's Association guns along with other wares.

That's a nice looking Hawken, FrontierGander.  Some amazing curl on the right side of the butt stock.

My friend Bob Allen and I used to have fun trying to figure out unusually marked rifles like this one.  It clearly has the "GREEN RIVER RIFLE WORKS" over "ROOSEVELT, UTAH" stamp on the barrel.  But I enlarged the photo of the left side of the lock area, and there is no serial number or caliber stamp visible on the left oblique flat to indicate it is a factory rifle.  I didn't see a makers mark either, but the factory Hawken rifles built in 1973 and 1974 did not have makers mark stamps on them.

Some of the early Hawken kits were sold with the company stamp on the barrel.  Later, they quit marking kit barrels with the company stamp because some people were assembling kits and trying to pass them off as factory finished rifles.  This could have been an early hawken kit.

But there are some other interesting components on this rifle.  The breech plug was made by Griffith Tool Co.  These were not used on early GRRW Hawken rifles, but they did use a few on their rifles made in the late 1970's.  I ordered a Hawken kit from GRRW in 1979 and requested a Griffith Tool Co. breech plug with it.

The lock looks like it could be one of A. Schillinger's locks.  The hammer strongly resembles a Schillinger lock I have.  The rear sight looks like it could be one of Schillinger's sights, also.

This rear sight was copied from the original on Mariano Medina Hawken rifle.  Most copies of this sight were made with the lost wax casting method, but Schillinger milled his Medina sights from square stock on his milling machine.  In fact, Schillinger milled all his lock parts except for the hammer which was cast.  The rear sight in the photo has really sharp and square edges and looks to me like it was milled rather than cast and filed.

The early GRRW Hawken rifles had poured pewter nose caps like this one.  The highest serial number I know of with a pewter nose cap is SN 31.

Taking all this into consideration, I don't think this is a factory finished rifle.  It could be a kit gun.

Another possibility is that it could have been built by Doc White in the last few decades.  Doc had some barrels left over from when GRRW went out of business.  He also still has that "GREEN RIVER RIFLE WORKS" stamp and has been known to mark some of his rifles with it.

It would be interesting if the owner of the rifle could remove the lock and the barrel and see if either has any marks on the underside.

Still a nice rifle, all the same.

Phil,

Doc has more than just a few as does Carl and Les for barrels along with misc parts. Recently they have discovered a very large number of marked GRRW barrels stored in Roosevelt for over 40 years in a safe dry warehouse. Doc is working on that purchase with the owner at this time. Doc runs across GRRW guns every once in a while at the local pawn shop in Roosevelt (some never shot or close to it). The story of GRRW will just continue on through the years ....
