I'd like to make some buckskin pants. I've read that elk hide is too tough for clothing, except for mocs.

How many adult mule deer hides will I need to make pants?

Pants maybe 3 to 4 hides at least.

3-4 deer hides? Will one elk be enough?

Antelope makes good summer wear. Much lighter weight than deer.

I made a pair of drop front pants out of one large gold elk hide. You need to lay out your pattern on the laid out hide. If you do that you should be able to make it work. I made the waist band using a doubled up, heavy duty cotton canvas backing to make it more ridged. I used elk buttons on the drop front, and buffalo lacing for the gusset. FYI (you should know) Just a reminder; Keep all the leftover scraps of leather for repairs and small projects.

That sounds good. I have a problem with using elk now. I've decided that at my age and lousy back that I can't get the meat out from an elk without taking a chance of some of it spoiling. I also would like to make the pants from game i've shot. So, it will have to be deer hide now as that's all i'm hunting for from now on.

I could buy the elk hide but it's expensive and I really want to use hide i've hunted for.

Pete as tall as you are figure (3) large mule deer hides (not brain tanned). Brain tanned hides seem to vary in size I usually need like (3.5) hides. Stretching and smoking hides will help from baggy knees and butt if they get damp or wet. Have a friend that washes his buckskins in the clothes washer with regular soap (never had the guts to try that).

I always just wore what was on them, in time it will drop off or wash off if you screwup and fall out of the canoe or into a creek.
Pete I've done that more than I like to own up too.  Dunno
