Im not sure if they called this a hawken (Update: It is called a Hawken Hurricane ) back in the day but wow! A very sturdy built muzzleloader and they topped it off with a stainless steel breech set up.

Beautiful walnut as well.

Got her all cleaned up, inspected and ready to go!

I measured the rifling twist at 1:22 which makes it a conical/sabot shooter. I have an email off to navy arms regarding the max loads in this rifle.

That's a very nice rifle.

That rifle was made after Navy Arms resumed production about 2000.

Bought this .50 caliber Navy Arms Hurricane Hawken from Carlos several years ago. This rifle was made in the 1970s. It shoots the 320 grain Maxi Ball well.

It is HEAVY, Solid Stainless, with that Big brass Jag/Tip. The under Rib is Solid Brass as well, Definitely built BEEFY! How many Lands/Grooves is your .45?

This .58 of mine is a 3 Groove, 1:60 Twist.

Also curious about Nipple size of your .45?

This .58 Cal of mine is a HUGE 5/16-24

Just to make ABSOLUTE sure i took the nipple in to my Local Ace Hardware and tested it in their Thread pitch board, DEFINITELY 5/16-24
Navy Arms .45cal Hawken? ERqhw4gl

For comparison, here it is beside a Standard 1/4-28 TC Nipple

LMAO, yes the same size nipple here as well. I will have to go in the shop and get a better light to see the rifling. This has very shallow rifling and my head lamp doesnt focus the light enough.

Getting ready to go shoot some 460gr no excuse.

Couple of things I remember about shooting mine, The Single trigger was REALLY Stiff, i am so use to super light “Set” Triggers That it’s REALLY Tough on me to Shoot anything else. I am good friends with a local Gun Smith here, He has built MANY Custom Muzzleloaders throughout his lifetime, He told me to Bring this Navy Arms of mine up and he would work the Trigger over for me, I just haven’t done it yet.

The other thing I remember was Slight Hangfires, I was using my Swiss 2F Real Black. I know for a FACT everything (Powder chamber, Flash Channel) Was VERY Clean, and Bone Dry. But i stil had Problems with Slight Delayed fire? It definitely helped to REALLY TAP the Butt of this Rifle OVER N OVER, A LOT more than my Other Sidelocks. But again, i would stil get a few Slight Delays in firing? Maybe 1 out of 3 Shots was Good instant fire. The Bolster/Snail in these Rifles are DEEP, Lots of Room under the Nipple. If i were gonna Hunt with this Rifle i would Load it, Pull the Nipple and Trickle as much Powder as i could get under the Nipple.

I have only shot this .58 Cal 2 times, Not Enough to Learn the Gun. I set it aside until i get the Trigger worked over, This reminds me I need to get that done! The 2 times i Shot was Patched Roundball, The Trigger was so Harsh that i couldn’t adapt to it, therefore Accuracy wasn’t worth a Hoot. It’s my understanding from reading that this Rifle of mine is more Geared toward the Big Minie Balls. Old Man Val Forgett of Navy Arms made this particular .58 Cal rifle a “Pet Project” He Shot up to 200 Grains of 3F Powder Behind a 610 Minie Ball Shocked But ended up settling on 180 Grains. From what i read, He killed about every BIG critter in Africa with this “Hawken Hunter” .58 Cal, 180 Grains of 3F Behind a 625 Grain Shiloh Stake Buster Bullet like this. These 2 photos belong to Ronnman

PostSubject: Re: Navy Arms .45cal Hawken?   Navy Arms .45cal Hawken? EmptyJune 29th 2019, 5:32 pm

well this one does very well with the no excuse bullets. I had to switch to 80gr gearhart owen to get the tigthest groups. That swiss 3fg is garbage in every rifle i've tried it in so far. I think I can tighten up the groups even more with a wad. I normally use them, but completely forgot to take them today.

I want to shoot more of the little tc maxi balls, I enjoy them a lot more than the recoil the no excuse bullets produced.

I had 2 hang fires, one of which really hurt my 5 shot group lol, the other, just a touch lower than the other 3. I think its the #10 nipple they use. Plus the vent hole is HUGE, at least 1/16" or more. I wore shooting glasses today thank god, because i had a couple shots that splattered something across the lens.

TOW sells new nipples so I am probably going to order a replacement, but this time a #11 to keep things standard.

I can tell by your frustration it ain’t working! And i FULLY believe ya! And Truth is i have had Good, and BAD luck with 3F myself. Below is worth the time to read :rtup

As anyone that knows me, follows my videos, etc. You know that i shoot Swiss Powder EXCLUSIVELY, BUT i gave up on 3F about 2 years ago now? For Some reason I could NOT shoot a Group with my Trusty Old 3F anymore? And I was taking out proven gear, Rifle/Bullet/powder combos that i had shot SUPER GOOD groups with in the past, And for some reason I couldn’t duplicate it anymore? Out of COMPLETE frustration i tried a Group with Swiss 2F and WA LA!! There it was again! But why?? I stil Don’t have that answer? Something changed with 3F, They started doing something different, It has to be that?

But here is Back when Swiss 3F Shot REALLY good for me, this was a Ranged 107 Yards, there is 7 Shots, maybe 8? 7 for sure. This was 70 Weight Grains of Swiss 3F powder
Navy Arms .45cal Hawken? R38uXCkl

And these BACO 444-400 PP Bullets Shot the Target above
Navy Arms .45cal Hawken? OIJay6Ol

And here is a ranged 505 Yards, 70 Weight Grains of Swiss 3F, And same PP bullet above, Exact same load/Rifle that shot the Target above
Navy Arms .45cal Hawken? BJBNaWnl

A look from my Target back to my Truck/Shooting bench
Navy Arms .45cal Hawken? 8vd87jjl

And my Target, 3 Shots in 7” at 505 Yards, This is Old, But was back when Swiss 3F REALLY worked for me!
Navy Arms .45cal Hawken? DO9wIlwl

When Swiss 3F worked for me, it worked REALLY well! But like i said above, all of a Sudden I couldn’t shoot a Group with it anymore? I didn’t keep track of Powder lots? Any of that, But Something DEFINITELY changed the Next Can of 3F i Got. I came home DISGUSTED several times! That was when I decided to try 80 Weight Grains of Swiss 2F instead of 70 of 3F (RFD on Castboolits is who talked me in to Shooting 3F WAY back, Because he Shot it in Everything he owned and Swore by it, he didn’t steer me wrong, it did work VERY well for me for about 1 year)

It was After this Target that I COMPLETELY gave up on Swiss 3F, and i went to 2F and i have Stayed with 2F, ironically i stil have the same Can of Swiss 3F that I couldn’t seem to shoot a Group with anymore? I have promised Edmehlig that i would Run an Accuracy Test Someday Between the 2 and 3F, I stil haven’t gotten around to doing it.

See on another forum they said the same thing, something about an article in American shooter and they were discussing the same problem with swiss. Something isn't right about this powder at all. It actually has a blackhorn209 smell to it, only it doesnt shoot no where near as good as bh209 lol.

Got me REALLY Curious, What is the LOT # on your Can of Powder?

The can on the Left is my Old Can of 3F that i gave up on, On the Right is a 2018 Can of 2F, The 2F shoots STELLAR for me. All of the Cans look like the 2F on the Right now days, The Old Can of 3F is what it looked like when i first started buying it. About 2016, or 17 they Changed the looks to the can on the Right

Here you can see the LOT # of the Older Can of 3F, This was made in 2015

My .50 caliber Navy Arms Hurricane  is also getting hang fires.   The flame channel is very small compared to TC guns.  i'm gonna remove the plug and drill it out.

Update, i removed the plug and it don't need drilled out. The channel was cruddy. Cleaned it with a bristled pipe cleaner.
