PostSubject: A new gun!   December 5th 2011, 8:01 pm

Did some trading with another fellow off another forum and i picked a custom made .50cal Hawken off the list that i had saw years ago. Beautiful curly maple stock, L&R percussion lock, double set triggers, 28" .50cal barrel " no maker name on it or anything". In fact its such a custom job that the breech plug is a bolt thats been cut off and a tang welded onto it. Very common deal with home built muzzys. Very light weight as well. I have it loaded now with 90gr 3f american pioneer and a .500" 250gr Thor so after i shoot it tomorrow i will weigh the rifle. Its very light weight and extremely comfortable. As for sights, it uses a low profile semi buckhorn with a thin german silver front sight.

Only shot it 6 times today, 2 at a bucket for fun and then 2 shots at 50 yards off had which fell into a 1 1/2" group and 2 more times at 75 yards which fell into a 4" group off hand. I used 80gr 3f american pioneer and a 320gr REAL without the wads. She looks like she will be a shooter!

I do have plans on adding some finishing touches. The barrel uses a single pin " not a wedge key" and so i would have to inlet the stock a bit and install either brass or silver "mounts?" for the pin to go through so i dont have to worry about messing up the wood.

Will post pics later!

Not sure of the twist on this rifle yet, i have to do the ramrod trick with a tight patch and measure the twist later on. Shes shooting the REALs pretty darn good so i hope its at least a 1:48

Oh baby!!! 90gr 3f American Pioneer, 250gr .500" Thor grouped exactly 1" at 50 yards off my Tack Driver bag rest. I believe shes going to work out just fine for my elk hunt.

well heres the first 50yard target with the new rifle! I may have to adjust a bit to the left but i will leave it until i shoot off my lead sled. I was just kneeling down using a sand bag to shoot off of today. Im a bit shaky these days.

I also shot some 320 REALs that i cast and i see great promise in them as well. Only a 2 1/2" group but consistent. Just have to fiddle around with powder and powder charges.

I did the crude way of measuring the rate of twist and came up with 1:42 so its most likely 1:48 twist which will be perfect for shooting Thors and other conicals.

The 1:48 rifles work well with conicals. I still want to try the 300gr reals in my 1:60 Hawken and see if they'll group.

I got her out to 100 yards today with 80gr 3f American Pioneer, .018" patches and .490" homemade round balls. First shot was awesome " right under the bulls eye" but that funky APP always does that on a clean bore. Next 2 shots were AMAZING accuracy wise but low on a dirty bore. Those 2 shots were just slightly under 1" apart.

FG as there is no chance of a quick follow up shot with a ml i always give the bore a good swabbing between shots.

Okay heres that 100 yard target i took forever getting on here. But anyway this was 100 yards, 80gr Pyrodex RS, .490" round ball, .018" ticking with my conical lube which turned out to be extremely messy in the bore. Ive switched to hoppes black powder patch lube now to try out. My other stuff was just to waxy and gunked up the bore badly.

I did check the target after each shot and saw my first 2 shots as they show up in the target. I honestly don't think shot #3 is in the group. I'll just say that #3 went off to the left.

Patches looked brand new. Black areas on a few of the patches is unburnt Pyrodex. That lube while great for conicals, just was not good for my patches.
