PostSubject: Interesting find after squirrel hunt today   September 14th 2012, 8:42 pm

I found my .22 bullet that I shot a squirrel with today. It is a CCI Mini-Mag HP copper plated hollow point 36gn. 1260 fps. This bullet weighed in at 33.6gn. after a head shot. I hit the head broad side and found the bullet under the skin of the hind leg. I guess .22's are like a bouncy ball after all.

Yes .22's are known to "tumble" or "bounce" around.

My wife was an E.R./Trauma nurse for years & said that some of the worst gun shot wounds came from 22's because they rarely exited & usually stayed inside the body just bouncing around & tearing up everything.

The photo came out much better than I thought it would. It does make it look a lot bigger than it is. The bullet really made a mess out of that squirrel. The head was in tact some how, the front leg was destroyed and the hind leg had a hole and it stopped at the skin. I am going back to the CCI Stingers, which are 40gn. and 1640 fps, so hopefully I get that one to past through.

Sounds kind of funny not getting a pass through on a squirrel. Very Happy

That's why a good mechanic puts a few .22's in the head, they bounce around inside the skull. :Chief

Mechanic is a slang name for a hit man.

Chad said a .22 is known to tumble and bounce around. I was just giving an example.

I wonder if there is any round that has taken more life than the humble .22 Question

9mm is usually what shows up in people around this town that my wife has the pleasure of doing surgery on.

I'm thinking of human as well as animal live , most if not all of us cut our shooting teeth on a .22 and killed most smallgame and birds with it .

Yeah I bet a lot have. I actually did not. I started out with a .410 shotgun and then went to a 12 gauge and have hunted mostly with that.

I never really liked shotguns much. I just started hunting for the first time last year, and I used my .22 that I already had and bought my Bone Collector for deer season. The only shotgun that was appealing to me was/is the Winchester SX3, which is an $1,100 gun, and that is the reason I do not own one.

When I lived in Mass. All we could use was a shotgun for deer. I guess they allow a ML now. I would have got into a ML a long time ago if that was the law when I was there. I hated shooting a slug in a shotgun.

What more do you need than a bead on the end of the barrel? Laughing I used to have a old 20 gauge single shot that had no sights whatsoever. I loved that gun and could hit anything that flew, ran, hopped or whatever. Actually the Remington's that I had/have came with pretty decent rifled sights on the slug barrels. Mossbergs not so much but I never had a problem with them either. I haven't deer hunted with a shotgun for a few years but since I don't have a muzzleloader this year I will be and I must say that I'm pretty excited. Brings back old hunting memories for me.
