PostSubject: Tested the Hawken at 200 yards   June 30th 2013, 8:52 pm

My brother in law and I went out to the Whittington Center this morning. My brother in law wanted to chronograph his 270 and his 22-250 and me, I wanted to play with the 58 Hawken and .562" ball. I found a great hunting load at 110 grains Olde Eynsford  1 1/2 fg that produced anywhere from 2 1/2 to 3" at 100 yards with the harder to see 6" bulls eye. But the REAL fun came in when I slid my rear sight ramp all the way up and had my brother in law shooting the hawken with 120 grains Olde Eynsford Twisted Evil

His first shot was 18" low but when I took a shot, i was only 3" low and to the left. I think the wind was really screwing us. Maybe 7-10 MPH but with that ball, way to strong for any actual long range accuracy tests. I just wanted to get an idea on how my ramp sight was going to work out at 200 yards. Once i get more powder and time to just sit down on a calm day and test, i can put together more info on 200 yard shooting. Also bring my 8" targets since that front sight is so wide.

Great time though! That Hawken just gives the shooter a concussion like feeling once the trigger is pulled. My brother in law said he saw double vision on his last shot.

Shooting long range with ball is fun , we also try to out do each other at the range at distances up to 340 yds . Not very easy with a PRB.

With 120 grains of Olde Eynsford that would enough juice to give anyone double vision. Not to mention a very sore shoulder!  I run 90 grains of Goex 2F in my .58 and I think that has a pretty stout recoil.Very Happy

Excess recoil is not for sissies like me. I can't remember the last time I shot over 90 gr. of black powder.
I already have bad shoulders, I don't need more problems.
