PostSubject: Anyone Make There Own Blackpowder For Your Smokepoles?   January 10th 2014, 5:33 am

I ran across this article on making Blackpowder. It reminded me that a friend of mine said they used to make BP when they were kids. I wondered if anybody on the forum made there own. It seems rather involved but not real hard if you had the mills to help speed the process. The sun drying seems a little hard to predict.

We were juvenile delinquents when we were kids and used to mix up a low-grade type black powder, place it in pipes, screw on the caps and stick it in a fire until it blew up. We thought it was great fun until a kid in my class lost an eye.

The low grade powder we used to make as kids are known as meal powder , if you corn and crush that it becomes black powder.

I hate to say this, but that was just stupid!

I would like to learn how to make real muzzleloader grade BP for shooting in a muzzleloader.  No other use, shooting only.

When I see powder manufacturers blow themselves up. I have no desire to make powder.

Yeah it's a risky business  Wink

If you grind everything separately the risk is low . When I do the final grinding I remove the mill from the garage and put it at the bottom corner of the garden so if something does go wrong it's out of the way.

making in large amounts is whats dangerous, its the dust thats highly explosive, not so much the powder itself.

A 1/2lb of powder blowing up in your face isn't dangerous?

i know a guy who makes his own blackpowder.  He has chronoed the stuff and it's comparable  to commercial  black powder.

This is a good video from the web:

In an electrically operated ball mill or rotary cartridge case cleaner with lead balls.

I've got an electrically operated ball mill and a very long extension cord.
