PostSubject: I just effed up my BH209 plug!!!   March 22nd 2014, 4:36 pm

Im getting things together for tomorrows shoot. I got some Blackhorn 209, and some hunting bullets/sabots to see just how accurate my accura can shoot. Got my shim kit and 209 plug from Cralos and I'm feeling good.

Well, not too good..  The new plug didn't come with a wrench to crank fit the threads. So I lubed the threads and installed. When I got to the end I used an Allen key to snug fit it. Oh good god I just screwed it up!! The Allen key dented the primer pocket when I was tightening down, now the primer won't fit in the hole.

Is there ANY fix for this, or am I sending more money to Carlos for another.

I'm so pissed, I don't know if I'll even shoot it tomorrow. I was really looking forward to this range trip with new goodies.

I think you're just supposed to finger-tighten them not wrench-tighten.   Dunno

No, you have to crank it down the first time to fit it to the barrel. You should have asked us how to do it. It's easy without the wrench.

Not sure how bad it is. No answer without seeing it.

If you had hot primers, and the headspace set right. It will work with BH 209, and the stock breech plug. We used BH 209 long before the special breech plugs came out.

Here's the trashed plug... I just sent Carlos a PM to order another.

So how is this fitted without the tool?

I believe you really are supposed to use the wrench the first time in order to "seat" the plug properly.  You should have used a pair of pliers with electrical tape on the jaws or something that would have given you the torque amplification evenly around the outside of the breech plug.

You might be able to sand down the dent. I wouldn't try a motorized tool because you could take out too much metal at once.  Then again, if you do, you can bring out the Allen key again Wink.

edit: now that you posted the pic as I was typing, I see that there might not be enough metal to shave the hole back to round without breaking through to the wrench cavity. No

Me personally, I'd find a punch and work at that to bend it back into shape.

Oops! As was mentioned. Wrap the outside of the plug, and use some channel locks. Nice and easy keep tightening until it bottoms out. Then back it off. From then on just use hand tight.

I use the handle of regular pliers as a wrench too, but you might be better off with the channel locks.

Just make sure when you fit it that you get it bottomed out all the way. Otherwise the gun won't close, or the hammer/trigger won't work right.

Very Happy
A heavy duty screw driver works well just to tighten it down and then only finger tighten it. Try and find a drill bit that's a hair smaller then the primer hole and try rounding it back into shape. It's going to take some muscle but it may worth a try since you were going shooting in the morning. GOOD LUCK Exclamation

I don't think I'd trust it/ Once any metal has been bent out of shape it is weakened as it is returned to it's original position. Same goes if the wall gets too thin from material removal. I don't know how much pressure is applied to the primer pocket sidewalls, but it's so easy to modify the original plug for BH209 that you can safely shoot with that one til your other one arrives.

I believe that the instructions to modify your plug are somewhere in the forum, but not sure where.

Like Jon said make up a tapered punch the same size as the primer and force the dent back out again .

Greg the primer does not take that much pressure during firing .

Carlos sells that BP for $29, but it only comes with the drill. The wrench isn't needed that bad, and you only use it once.

I never wrench tightened the one on my Optima II pistol and it's been shooting fine. Is it dangerous?

You only need the wrench when you install a brand new breech plug. When you crank it down with the wrench it fits the nose of the BP to your barrel. from then on you just need to use finger tight.

It's not needed with a new gun. It comes fitted from the factory.

You only need the wrench every time you replace with a new breech plug so you will need one at sometime.

Are you talking about the flame hole getting too big? How many shots does that take?

I used the BH 209 breech plug from Carlos. He sent it with a drill along with the original. He may have tightened it before he sent it .. I forget.
The base of the plug is touching the barrel end with the action closed. No blow by after I used the shim kit.
