The Look I'm After Empty
PostSubject: The Look I'm After   The Look I'm After Empty2014-04-10, 18:59

The picture is the look i'm going after. I lost a bunch of weight to get in mountain shape, and if i let my beard grow longer. I could be this mountain man with the same clothing. I've found the material for the shirt. I just need to get a pattern. I want to make all m y own stuff. The buckskin pants will only be made from deer/elk i've shot. Hopefully I can get a bear this year, and make a bear claw necklace like he has.

I had an offer from a friend today. He has a primitive cabin up by St Elmo at 10,000ft. He said he doesn't use it anymore, and I could use it all I want. Live in it full time if I want. It might be hard living in the winter up there, but spring to fall would be perfect. If I decide to live there full time i'll sell my Jeep, and get another mule. Lots of creeks full if brookies and cutthroats up there. Lots of game that I wouldn't need tag to kill, because i'd be living off the land, and too remote to buy food. I'd stock up on what I need before the snow hits hard.

Dressing up for rendezvous is ok, but it's not my style to play make believe. I have to become the character, and live the lifestyle to be happy with it. I was born way too late to be a mountain man, but this would be pretty close, or as close as I can get. Maybe I could do some trapping too.

btw If you didn't know. St Elmo is a ghost town now. I'd be a good ways from it, but it's the closest i'd be to humans.

Jeep will be useless up there. A mule will still get me around, and haul stuff.

Yeah, it will be harder than hell, but that's the appeal of it.

Some idiot from Florida will show up and shoot your mule for a doe mule deer.   Deadhorse

You also need to get a Pennsylvania long rifle instead of the Renegade.

PS: Those are griz claws he has. I doubt you'll draw a tag for one of those.  Tease

Not to worry.

A flintlock will be the gun I use.

Yes, I know about the claws. Something like this will be fine.

The Look I'm After Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Look I'm After   The Look I'm After Empty2014-04-11, 09:08

The biggest difference is when I was young, and better able to do this I had to work. I could maybe live off the land, but i have other needs that take a certain amount of money.

Now I have my SS check to cover my needs, so I can live in the mountains easily. I'd have no bills at all. I'd still need to buy some supplies from town a few times a year. I'd need shooting supplies, wool blankets for capotes etc. I can't live on just meat, so i'd need money for spuds, beans and stuff. Some fruit now and then would be good too. My dog and the mule will have needs too.

The ghost town of St Elmo is a tourist attraction. It has a small general store that's open from late spring to early fall that I could get some supplies. I know the owner of the store, and i'm sure he'd bring up what he normally doesn't sell for me. Otherwise, i'd have a mule ride of 15 miles down the mountain to a small town to get what I need. The cabin is about 2 miles from St Elmo with no roads to it farther up the mountain. So, that's an easy trip for me when the snow isn't too deep. I'd be pretty much snowed in for the deep of winter. I could get out for hunting with snowshoes, but long trips would be hard. Too deep for the mule too.

Lots of stiff to work out. I could keep the Jeep, and leave it parked in St Elmo to take down the mountain when needed, but i'd rather not. The mule will be fine, and way more in the spirit of what i'm doing.

Plus come spring, we'd find you froze to a tree!

It's got a nice pot belly stove to keep me warm in the winter. I need to make sure I have enough firewood chopped up to last the winter. I can use the mule to haul it to the cabin.

Colorado is full of old mining ghost towns. Here's a video of another one I go through to one of my hunting areas. It's on a different mountain than St Elmo. Another nice area.

LOL.....Good deal. I know where to get my shooting supplies.

It is in good shape for how old it is. It's the most well preserved ghost town in Colorado. Probably why it's such a tourist trap.

Here's another one Jon. Remember I talked about taking you to Winfield to hunt? I have some good hunting areas here, and the little ghost town is pretty cool too.

Living like that is a very serious business.  One slip, trip, fall, bug bite, or the slightest injury could turn into a life threatening situation in a big hurry.  But, If your dedicated to the lifestyle I say go for it.

A mule/horse trip of 15 miles takes the better part of a day. 20 is about tops unless you want to be doing it after dark .... and wearing out your mule.  scratch

Funny you should mention this. I just watched Jeremiah Johnson again last night for the 10th time. They showed it on AMC.

Yep! That's how Muley looks.

AMC looked half way decent, finally something in HD. Bluray though takes all that hissing out of the audio and really makes the image pop.
