PostSubject: CVA Optima - what projectile and load?   September 11th 2014, 12:37 pm

I have been using 245gr PowerBelt Cooper with AeroTip on top of 150 grains of 777 pellets. ALL the reading I have done recently, as I have begun questioning myself, says "NO!".

PowerBelts seem nice because of the skirt and no need for sabot. But I have read about the Barnes Expander MZ and some other non-lead alternatives working much better.

Is there a definitive answer for whats the CVA Optima likes? Or top 2 or 3 it seems to like?

Thanks for the help,
Bill

Both of my Optimas, a Optima Pro and Optima Mag shoot the 300 gr. .45 cal Hornady XTP w/short black mmp sabot and 100 gr. pyrodex select very well...Out of another Optima I used to have I shot the 348 gr. powerbelt with either 100 gr. pellets or 85 gr. of loose and it shot into about 1.25 in. at 100 yds, with the 100 gr. load at close range the powerbelts would basically blow up inside the deer, looked like a greanade had went off inside them with little fragments all in the chest cavity, it usually dropped them right in their tracks but became concerned about hitting shoulder bone and switched over to 85-90 gr. loose pyrodex and started getting pass thrus..

It depends on what you want to spend & what you expect from your bullet. I would recommend a Lehigh .458/300 Subsonic in an MMP orange sabot, then a Barnes TEZ 250 or 290 in a Harvester EZ Load smooth black sabot. These are devastating bullets that are responsible for a lot of DRT deer. They are premium bullets & yes, they cost more but they do what they are supposed to do. I would suggest 100 to 110gr BH209 by volume.

I forgot to add the PT Gold 260 bullet. A value priced proven performer, again in a Harvester EZ load smooth sabot with 90-110gr BH209

Mine LOVES the Barnes 250 TEZ's with BH 209 but the best shooting/killing load for me is the Thors and BH209

What the Optima's love is 100gr Blackhorn209 and a 250-300gr Powerbelt Aerolite! Thats my #1 go to load for those rifles.

Greg nailed it.  My family has 4 Optimas.  All four love Barnes 250 TMZ bullet with Harvester smooth sabot with 100 grains of BH209.  In fact my nephew shot a 135 yard (3 shot) one inch group last week with his Optima with this very load.  I'm a TC Encore guy myself, but these inexpensive Optimas and Wolf's impress the heck out of me.
